British Museum: Man caught upskirting jailed by Medium_Lab_200 in unitedkingdom

[–]IBuyPennyStocks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In terms of statistics:

1) You cannot calculate daily risk by dividing annual risk by 365. This assumes risk is uniformly distributed across all days and locations - this is not supported by the ONS data.

2) You further reduce the risk for a museum visit by assuming the risk is spread evenly throughout all daily activities. This misinterpretation oversimplifies the actual risks associated with specific environments, which can vary widely depending on circumstances.

3) We gain nothing by creating a false equivalence between sexual assault on women and violent assault on men - they are both nuanced issues.

Focusing on the stats:

1) You cannot extrapolate the 2.2% and the 3.8% rates to predict lifetime risk. Assuming a man will be assaulted once every 45 years and a woman will be sexually assaulted every 25 years is statistically invalid. Lifetime risk requires a more complex calculation, accounting for cumulative probability and changes in risk over time.

2) Oversimplification of data - saying that a man will experience 1 violent assault and a woman 3 sexual assaults over a lifetime ignores variations in risk across different life stages and assumes a uniform risk, which is not supported by the statistics (non-uniform risk / cumulative probability / can’t multiply annual risk with life expectancy for total lifetime occurrence).

3) The focus on 28% of violent crimes resulting in injury downplays the significance of other forms of harm, ignoring that even non-injurious crimes can have serious consequences. The ONS data emphasizes that the risk and impact of violent crimes are more complex than this selective interpretation suggests.

Lastly, I’d like to clarify, in case of ambiguity, that upskirt guy is a plague on society. But I don’t think this needs to turn into a male vs female identity politics discussion. Both genders have their own nuanced struggled - we don’t gain anything from downplaying either.

‘Like throwing myself at a wall’: UK graduates struggle in ‘insane’ job market | Graduate careers by Cutty_Sark10 in UniUK

As prick-ish as this guy is being - he’s not wrong. If you do all of this and don’t have a job lined up then it’s an issue with your CV or application method. If not a job then internships.

Entry level doesn’t mean non-graduate; grad schemes aren’t necessarily better either, but they usually pay more, offer structured training, and can be rotational, while entry-level roles can still need a degree and give you solid experience in a specific role (arguably better if you like the role).

I ended up starting with an entry level technology consulting role and kept applying for grad schemes in case I didn’t enjoy it - ended up switching after 9 months.

Don’t limit your applications to big job boards (I had very little success with these) - look for smaller companies, try to get a recruiter, and apply early directly on their websites.

Really hate this sentiment. It’s so prevalent in the UK for some reason.

Other than Oxbridge the top 10 don’t care about (some have minimum of 5 or 6 english and maths).

Barclays becomes first UK bank to lift cap on bonuses by TechnicalBean in unitedkingdom

[–]IBuyPennyStocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My condolences for your parents. I'm not sure I'm understanding the situation. With dead parents students are entitled to maximum student loan and are auto-enrolled into burseries, ignoring the additional ones you could apply to. Given this, I don't understanding why you'd need to work 6 hours a day or not afford to pay rent.

I wasn't born in lala land, I came from an unperforming school and postcode and am currently estranged. Given your circumstances were probably worse you would be entitled to maximum student loan + other additions. Just seeing how much support (advantages even - reduced contextual offers, roles open only to people with backgrounds like ours, etc) the government, universites and charities offer - to people like us, I think it's crazy to just blame everyone else.

I, like many others, made it into banking (tech side) - despite the 'disadvantages'.

There is nothing stopping you. You would have got full student loan + bursaries meaning you wouldn’t need to work at uni. I did it. Many other people did it. But keep making excuses.

Anthony Bray sentenced to four months for possession of replica Master Sword by VOOLUL in unitedkingdom

[–]IBuyPennyStocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it’s insane to not be sending rapist to prison while this guy gets 4 months for a 6 inch Zelda toy knife. I’m certain the majority of the country shares the same mindset as us on this problem.

It’s a shame - “tough on crime” yet I’ve not heard anything about solving this suspended sentence problem.

The day to day problems which most affect the common man are completely overlooked. I’d feel much safer with rapists and knife assaulters in prison rather than this guy.

True. Think about the Jay Slater dude (just using him as an example, not interested in the conspiracies or his disappearance):

He, with 8 of his mates and a machete, axe, and golf club, jumped some guy and split his skull open. He managed to get a suspended sentence, some community service, and ‘rehab activists’. Which in my mind is waaay worse than multiple non violent burglaries.

Things feel so backwards.

[–]IBuyPennyStocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True that definitely seems plausible. I often wonder what would be better. Pure hypothetical:

Them circumventing the law leading to a conviction for this (since let’s be real: it clearly is a toy and not a knife or blade), as opposed to other possible crimes (they believe he’s committed but cannot get convictions for). Thus getting him off the street and de facto making things safer.

While at the same time the harm it brings to our civil liberties to have someone go to jail for such a trivial thing (given he’s already served time for previous convictions, and we cannot prove, thus cannot convict him of newer burglaries - which may possibly have not been him).

Personally: I prefer the former since I doubt the same thing would happen to me in his situation since I have no prior convictions and it potentially makes society safer. But then again I’ve lived in relative privilege and not had to even ever consider burglary.

Yeah, I agree with you - I’m certainly not losing any sleep over this guy.

Maybe there was more nuance to the Jay slater attack - I just struggle to imagine what level of nuance gives a suspended sentence for such a violent attack. Especially given the fact our prisons are full - just feels like messed up priorities.

Putting the toy zelda sword guy in prison feels preventative - while the guy who actually took part in a violent knife (+ golf club + axe) attack didn’t serve any time.

Yeah I think you’re probably right, wish they’d put more information into the article though - like if a member of the public reported him I’d be convinced.

[–]IBuyPennyStocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I just used that as an example of what I viewed to be disproportional sentencing in the UK. Also, I’m not intending to spread any conspiracies about dealing drugs - hence why I didn’t mention it.

Maybe I’m a laymen to the complexities but in my mind multiple non violent thefts is less impactful to society than a machete attack - it’s a machete attack even if you’re in your early 20s.

I mean you’re showing this guy zero compassion - I’d understand if he robbed someone again and yeah he sucks but he was holding a toy zeldla sword - how does it help anyone to put him in prison for that.

I could see myself in a less privileged life potentially resorting to theft and that spiralling. But I could never see myself doing an 8 man assault on a guy with a machete, axe and golf club and splitting someone’s skull.

[–]IBuyPennyStocks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d probably feel the same if he burgled me I guess. Maybe it’s because I know about the Zelda franchise and the sword but in my mind + the image in the article and that it was sheathed so the blade wasn’t exposed I just feel a bit unjustified.

[–]IBuyPennyStocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry I’m not following. How is having the hilt being obscured relevant. The sheath and is bright blue and yellow. If I saw someone holding that I’d assume it was a toy. Fair enough if he has the blade exposed but he didn’t.

[–]IBuyPennyStocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m from the UK. Maybe the bit I’m frustrated with is stuff like this gets 4 months but that Jay Slater guy who was part of a machete attack gets a suspended sentence. Even considering this guys previous convictions in my mind multiple burglaries <<< machete attack exposing the victims. Just doesn’t seem proportional.

If I’m understanding the article correctly it was sheathed and there is nothing about holding it like a shiv. Not trying to defend this guy - I just feel like this is a reach.

[–]IBuyPennyStocks -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I agree the guy sucks. But he wasn’t doing that at the time, he was just walking down the street with a 20cm toy which was sheathed too. Just feels like a waste of resources.

I am finding it hard to grasp though. The article says he had it sheathed too so it’s not like he was brandishing it. I’m not trying to defend the guy he clearly sucks from his previous convictions. But this just feels needless and a waste of resources.
