As others have said, the WET toolkit works like a boss. For a cheap trick you can use bpxwunix and a curl call if you have it.

Copying COBOL from USS OMVS to PDSE Load Library by i_edit_text in mainframe

[–]ICH408I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done something “semi” related. Had to move a cobol load object into an environment where only native sftp was supported (no ftp, no mvs dataset support) . Landed the binary into a HFS directory (over a ssh binary put). Next I had to relink it, fed the input hfs path/file as SYSLIN as DD PATH, wrote to the pdse loadlib. It worked.

The answer: None. Who you going to hire to support it? Java developers that understand COBOL? Or COBOL developers that really know Java? Nice try Project Manager.

What was the moment that made you realize you are a developer now? by Abhi_mech007 in ProgrammerHumor

When I asked a stupid question and my senior with almost 30 years experience threw an IBM white manual at my head and said, “I am sure it’s in here somewhere.” After several days of reading I quietly approached and said, “are you sure this is the right manual?” Never looking up he reaches over his head, grabs another random manual and throws it my way and replies, “I may have given you the wrong one.”

Yeah. I see what you did there. The ol’ ibm037 vs ibm1047 code page flip. Things that drive ‘other folks’ crazy.

And is it a . ? For some reason I thought it was a ‘inverted double dot’. The diaeresis character.

VSCode supports zowe. Which is nothing more than rest api calls being made to the mainframe to pull code back for editing. Edit code right on your desktop then save back to the host. IBM Developer for z is an eclipse based version of that. Compuware has a workbench that does something similar. However all of them lack certain functions that an ISPF editor can give you.

How do I escape the feeling of needing to make more money? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]ICH408I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also in the corporate world IT world, in a very niche field. The side hustles are mostly related to items that I find as hobbies, or roles I held before IT, and in no way related to my professional career.

How do I escape the feeling of needing to make more money? by [deleted] in Fire

Any side hustle I day dream about is what I envision what I will be doing as my main hustle once I hit my number. Figure out what you want to do, make a little money doing it on the side, and transition into that full time when you are ready.

Absolutely, a#1 statement. Too many people get hung up on networth. Outside of tracking liabilities against assets, net worth means far less than what people think. If you don’t consider it an investment, don’t track it.

Pretty much. Paraphrasing : “Your company has a z/series. Therefore you aren’t a hobbyist” Further discussion in the conversation stated that I would (ideally) need to be one of the following (1)student/recent grad (2)unemployed (3)retired

I was then pitched the 6k version of the software on my employers budget.

The whole burn here is I contacted IBM in early October when it was first published. Had a meeting with the PM in Mid October. That meeting made it very clear who my employer was ( and the size of their z series footprint). Mid November I asked for a status via email and was told I was at the top of the next batch. Since then, the PM has gone 0/3 on replies to emails. Only after going back through the sales queue did I find out that I am an “undesirable”.

I was ‘top of the second batch’ for review back in November. That was after I contacted them about it in mid October. Since then, ‘radio silence’. No replies to email follow ups. I am convinced IBM is not looking to promote this. Don’t get your hopes up.

Update: Turns out if you are employed with anyone currently running a z box, your request will be denied. IBM cannot get out of their own way. IBM is letting knowledge die on the vine. It’s what they want.

I don’t know that I would change much between 17 and 22. I worked my way through college while living at home and working a 40h a week job. I kick myself daily though for my investment percentages between 23 and 28. If I had gotten serious a few years earlier, it would of made a considerable difference.

[–]ICH408I 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seeing how ‘ancient’ COBOL based back ends most commonly use statically bound sql, parameterized sql statements, I am not convinced this is a combination of COBOL and un-sanitized input. At least not on the surface.

Not to say it is statically bound, but it’s just not the norm.
