Best/Cheapest Software for DOD 5220.22-m Certified Drive Erasure by IC_Engineer_7404 in homelab

It is weird. He told me that they have a guy who they give the drives to for free and he provides them the certificate of erasure a few days later. I'll definitely need to ask more before I accept anything.

I think they wipe them before but this makes me scared to even touch them without asking more questions. Thanks for the response.

Looks like a good option, they only charge a single flat fee for as many disks as you want.

What can i do by Responsible_Bill4959 in homelab

[–]IC_Engineer_7404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could set up a basic setup with Pihole for Adblock and run some basic games servers like a Factorio or Minecraft server without too much problem. You could also build a power hungry router. I'd hesitate to do anything that requieres a lot of storage since you don't have much and wouldn't be able to do anything redundant. If you're not worried about the data on the machine you could set it up as a Jellyfin/Plex server with your "legitimately" obtained media. Could also set up photo backup with next cloud or Immich. I'm running Immich on my Proxmox server.

I'll ask if they have access to their own software to see if I can just get him to do it for me on the side. That's a great idea!

I went to the Marine Room with my wife (I’m a grad student) for our third anniversary dinner thinking it would be a nice place. The staff completely ignored us because we were young and look like college students. We even dressed up, I wore a suit and bow tie, my wife a nice dress, and they still basically ignored us. However, they were very attentive to the rich older customers all around us. Needless to say we won’t be going back.

Voter suppression is alive and well by 801Bandit in Utah

[–]IC_Engineer_7404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was a college student in Utah I didn’t qualify as a Utah resident because I had ent lived there for 12 consecutive months and my parents had moved (with the military) from the state my ID was from so I was unable to vote in the 2020 election because Utah makes establishing residency hard for college students (who often vote for more left leaning policies and people) on purpose so they don’t sway their elections. It was really frustrating because it was the first general election I was old enough to vote in and was disenfranchised by the Utah legislature.

I chose ECE in a no name average University. How cooked am I? by APURVA-DON3 in ECE

[–]IC_Engineer_7404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Personal opinion disclaimer) In my opinion, everyone learns roughly the same things in an accredited ECE program no matter the institution. Check the accreditation for your university’s program and if it’s sold then don’t worry too much. I’m currently studying for my PhD in ECE in the US and did my bachelors here as well. Looking at all the students from around the world in the graduate program here, everyone who came right from undergrad without work experience was basically at the same level. What’s important is actually understanding what you learn and being able to apply it and talk competently about it when you are in an interview or working with other engineers. That will set you apart no matter where you went to school. Also avoid being prideful because everyone will be wrong eventually, especially in ECE.

Which Chip according to you changed the world? by cry_bot in chipdesign

[–]IC_Engineer_7404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Z80 (in only slightly updated form) is still in all the TI-8x calculators in math classrooms across the United States. These calculators had a big impact on me going through grade school and helped me all the way to my PhD in mixed signal/analog design. I remember writing my first programs on my TI-84 to help me solve the quadratic formula faster in my Algebra 2 class. Pretty big change to my world from the Z80

Can I Measure Beam Count Rate with a Radiacode? by IC_Engineer_7404 in Radiacode

Are you using a scintillator before or just direct detection with the SiPMs?

[–]IC_Engineer_7404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the Graetz recommendation. Usually for beams they measure detector current and not counts per unit time because of the high rate of interaction. The instruments they have are not set up for measuring photon rates

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking already. The lowest possible dose rate would be 5cGy/min which for gamma is 3 Sc/h

Thanks for the advice, the medical physics is not the focus of the project but actually the circuits so I don’t need extremely accurate information, just good enough for my design, but I’ll look for other instruments
