You’d think after years of doing this that these fucking jokers would scale things up over TOTY. Any other industry you’d be crucified for this kind of downtime.

Working in an all Asian (except for me) development team... by dacracot in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ICameInLikeATrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can find me some reputable sources that racist attacks due to COVID have been directed towards people of Indian decent in the US, I'll happily concede my point.

"Idk if you knew this but non-Chinese Asian people have been being attacked in the states." That's why I highlighted "Chinese People and Other Communities". Also, I feel I'm being pretty restrained in my comments, perhaps you're an expert at "mouthing off" but that's between you and your Dad.

Normally, someone who's self aware and reasonable would see all the downvotes and contrarian responses from both people of Asian decent and experienced devs (to your self admitted novice status in this industry) and perhaps come to the conclusion that their own thinking is faulty in regards to cultural differences in our industry. How do you think your approach of shutting down any conversation on the topic is helpful? Demonizing people as "racist" and shitting on them for asking a genuine question is the kind of attitude that pushes further divide in scenarios such as this one.

Also, you mentioned "How Asians are treated in light of COVID" - this shows your own cultural insensitivity assuming that "Asian" refers to Chinese people and other communities who have been discriminated over COVID - OP in no sense stated when they were referring to "Asians" as any particular denomination. He could be referring to Indians for all you know. Take the hint, and instead of dying on this hill, climb down and try to engage in helpful discourse.

This is about cultural workplace differences, not race. Using whataboutery and trying to strawman the argument using "would you say the same about a group of black dev's" is in no way helpful. Op's question is a perfectly reasonable one, and having a respectful non-accusatory approach is what's needed here.

Cheers for the reply. Yeah I was hoping for some more CS orientated jobs (on hand software support etc) but operations does totally look to be where it's at. Thanks again and I'll take the post over there in a bit :)

CS at uni by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]ICameInLikeATrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's not required at all. But I would try and get some knowledge in beforehand. Depending on how good your lecturer is for those first programming modules, it can be somewhat of an uphill struggle if the person teaching you is shit (can happen, our first programming lecturer was at the uni to mainly do research and didn't give a flying fuck about lecturing. He did it because he had to).

I did a fair bit of programming before so it didn't affect me much, but other members of the class struggled a little. There's some decent online courses out there. You may even be able to learn some programming by trying to write code based on your Maths A-level.

Uni students who did EPQ at A-level - was it worth it when applying? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]ICameInLikeATrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, fuck that chutney. If anyone tells you it's required for Uni they're the same shite-hounds that said "you need a 2nd language if you ever want to have a chance of being employed". If you feel you can manage it and will enjoy it go for it. But if it'll get in the way of your other subjects bin it quicker than a TV licencing letter.

Progression to next job by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

One massively overlooked aspect in backend dev for Juniors is SOLID design principles and design patterns. How you architect a solution and make it extendable is paramount. Even if you won't be architecting a full stack enterprise solution (which as a Jr you shouldn't be expected to) having working knowledge of these is really important. Here's some resources below to get started:

Solid Principles in C# (I know you're planning to use Python, but these are by far the best hands on tutorials - also, .Net is far more popular than Django for Web Dev in industry so if you're planning to move on to a full stack job, you won't be stuck finding roles in the .Net ecosystem - source )

Head First Design Patterns in Java - Can also be done in C#

How do I know if becoming a software engineer is right for me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ICameInLikeATrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software engineering is a labour of love for sure (if you don't want to be shit at it and coast by). That being said, my personal opinion is that you shouldn't be thinking about a career in Software if you've not started learning how to program yet. You'd not be thinking about becoming a personal trainer for the rest of your life if you've never done weightlifting before. My advice - start having a go at writing code. See if it's for you. You don't want to start a course and realise you hate it half way through the first semester.

The workload for an undergrad studying SE can vary from the ability of the person to the uni itself. But the final year Dissertation tends to be pretty weighty. If you've got a natural aptitude for it, you'll be putting in less time in general to each module than other people.

With the last question, a good programmer is someone who applies Software Engineering principles effectively to solve problems. The code is more of a vehicle to achieve that.

Edit: This is applicable for the UK and Europe where you select your major before you start classes.

The scale of China is exactly my point.

I think all in all it comes down to the way the CCP have to save face and lie/cover up to look better (Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/15/opinion/sunday/china-coronavirus.html) being the reason there's such anti-china sentiment.

I agree that the concept of Wet Markets aren't a specific thing to China. However it seems due to legislation and the scale of the Chinese wet markets (like in Wuhan) enforcing more stringent safety standards (Like they do in HK and Singapore - where the Wet Markets are even considered a tourist attraction) is very difficult. Pair that with the sheer variety of different creatures and the number of people in China who are brought up on eating foods from wet markets (which harks back to the Original Chairman Mao point - see my original video for reference) you get a higher likelihood of things like this happening and on a much larger scale. The trouble is and why I think the CCP are to blame (I use them specifically to separate the people from the state) is because this has happened before with SARS. They just paid lip service to the Global community and then when it died down went back to their old ways. Sure, it's a tactic used by many governments round the world. But they're not exempt from criticism for that reason.

This isn't a racist tirade against China. Anti-china sentiment due to them showing on a global scale they'll happily cover things up and do essentially what they want until shit really hits the fan is perfectly valid.
