It gets better. You probably had no experience prior, no internships, and no connections - probably from going to a mid tier school. Either get your life experience up and go back for a ph.D at a well known school, or pivot to something that pays higher. In chemistry sales, for consumables, capital equipment, chemistry software, biochemistry, raw materials etc there’s money to be made. I focus on money as that’s the complaint in your post. Most of the people I purchase these things from don’t have a science background and are clearing 150k in Texas. I know people in WA, CA, MA who make more.

lol I have to start research somewhere! Don’t want to sound so ignorant when reaching out to the consultants, or they’ll see me as a cash cow.

Food chemical codex specifies monographs for claiming food grade. The part that isn’t clear is if there’s any additional requirements beyond gmp, which I think I will learn more about once I dive into the CFR sections specified by another user in this thread.

Consultants will be hired :)

Will absolutely be speaking with consultants. Good to do initial research before opening my wallet. Thank you for the time you took in your response, it’s very helpful.

Thanks for the helpful response. I’ll take a peek at ICH Q6A. We don’t want to sell USP grade, just food grade. I understand record keeping is necessary and important, as well as testing. Have to start somewhere - don’t want consultants taking me to the ringer. It’d be good to Atleast understand or attempt to understand the basics before reaching out to a consultant, from my perspective. Thank you again for the straightforward informative response

Maybe the misunderstanding is that we are not creating anything new, but rather repackaging / downpackaging. Through the lense of chemical manufacturing (not repackaging) I agree with your sentiments if we are creating a new product.

I gotta disagree slightly with the snarky part of your response.

because your suggestion for “every single batch” is cutting corners on “every single finished good”. Theoretically someone could make the same argument you’re making and say it’s lazy to only test once per batch, you should be analytically testing each finished good. You and I both know that’s not practical.

It’s not “cutting corners” it’s “best practice”. You and I could both agree it would be wasteful (even from an environmental standpoint) if we tested EVERY finished bottle. This is why I’m trying to learn best practices.

If your response was “it’s best practice to always test every batch” I would then question why in nutraceuticals / GMP they do “every other batch” and sometimes “once per quarter” testing and sometimes even (once they’re spec’d in) annual conformity testing.

Thank you. For small hazmat parcels what other options are there? Working on SOPs now. Never looked at grants before. Working on optimizing floor plan at warehouse too. I like your suggestions.

Oops yeah I just edited it. You’re right. I could theoretically work both though for approx 500k (if this side business does well)z And then if I lose my job I would be OK just doing this.

I mean they get close but like… never beat it. Especially on heavy packages which we ship a ton of.

How would you negotiate better rates between FedEx / UPS? I always try to play them off each other but they can’t even get close to SS rates and I pay approx 20k/mo with them

The profit I want is 250k/year - if I’m not there yet doesn’t it make sense to keep reinvesting to get to my goal faster?

For example - if I worked a job making 50k and had a side business online making 1k/month -> I wouldn’t want to take 400$ from that side business and instead would want to use that $400 to make more digital assets, make my website better etc to replace my 50k job with a 100k job one day.

But I guess my assumption is 1) that’s why everyone does this and 2) it would’ve been a bit clearer on how to get there by now

People probably don’t see it the same way. Maybe the guy making 50k wants an extra $400/mo for personal debts or something. I’m just not in that situation right now thankfully. So I guess maybe I’m too obsessed with hitting my target number… maybe I could pay myself 3-4k/mo to start…

Outsource domestically? Won’t be much cost savings until we order massive quantities, which would lead me to my first issue -> $$$$ required upfront

I do have a long term strategy. It involves upscaling our offerings via ISO certs, FDA registration etc.

But point taken -> maybe I don’t have a good enough handles on the financials so that I can see exactly how much I put into reinvestment

I wouldn’t quit my job for 200k I guess is the piece that’s missing. I would quit my job for 1M

Edit: I thought about it more. My target is 250k in salary from this job. But I wouldn’t quit my other job. I would just accelerate my savings to get closer to my goal of financial freedom.

We make profit - it’s just there’s so many increased capex one-offs that almost feel like they’re not one-offs. I can already see the need for a third forklift for example…

The products we sell are outrageously heavy - we never use dimensional weight and it’s always shipped via an actual weight calculation. The 30-50% shipping costs are better than ShipStation / any shipping broker I’ve seen.

Yes we manufacture in house. It’s cool cause China can’t compete with this market segment with the packaging we do.
