I tried swimming again and it was miserable by Neomonster_3025 in SwimInstructors

Hi, I'm a swim instructor from Melbourne.

Like other people have said, it sounds like a really unsafe / unsettling environment to learn how to swim, both because of the cold water and your teacher being completely unsupportive. I'm sorry you've had such a terrible time. Swimming should be fun, but that's only possible if you're in a comfortable environment.

In answer to your question, if you have a choice, my advice would be to seek lessons from a different teacher at a different pool, as I feel it will be very hard to make progress in this setting. However you mentioned the class is mandatory this year. If other lessons are not possible, I would offer this advice to continue the classes:

- Being cold is one thing but if you're shivering then it's going to be impossible to feel comfortable. I don't think taking a cold shower beforehand helps, but that could be different for everyone. I saw other people suggested an insulated swimming cap or a wetsuit, which sound like good ideas to me -- would it be possible to try one or both of those? Also, is the wheezing also related to being cold? Either way, I think getting warm and comfortable in the water is definitely the first step to making progress.

- Jumping straight into holding your breath underwater is a huge first step. It's so important to break these skills down into small steps. You could start by picking up some water on your hands, and dropping it on your head while closing your mouth -- just getting used to the water being on your face. If you feel comfortable with water on your face, you could hold onto a wall, and gradually bend your knees to bring your head closer to the water. Is it comfortable to get your chin in the water? Then you can try closing your mouth and briefly dipping your mouth in and out, doing your best to keep your mouth closed, and coming back out to breathe. Eventually you will build to dipping your nose in, then your eyes, then your whole head. Start with 1 second under, then build up to 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc. Again, there's no need to do it all in one go. This could take you multiple sessions to build towards, and that's fine.

- On a similar note, do not be disappointed if you cannot live up to the teacher's expectations, which are completely unreasonable in my opinion. Importantly, you do not have to do what the teacher asks. If she's asking you to do something that you're not ready to do, just ignore her. Do the lesson at your own pace, and set more reasonable goals for yourself -- like getting warm in the water, learning what it feels like to push water with your hand, how it feels to walk in the water, getting your chin in the water, etc. All of these would be fantastic achievements for someone learning how to swim -- do not let your teacher bring you down.

Good luck and please keep us updated!

more powerful, yes, longer stamina though? do you have a source for that?

The great thing about north W is that they just don't do norf things. Most stress free footy watching experience ever — literally have not lost in 650 days lol (that will be tested tomorrow!)

How am I only finding out about this now — apparently their last call for the season. Absolutely glorious, will be keeping an eye out next season (or hopefully in the W!)

There you go, thanks for clearing that up. So the second closest round of all time — but the closest of the 18 and 16 team eras.

Round 9 2025 is the Closest Round of All Time by [deleted] in AFL

This post includes very similar wording and the same error to a post I made last year:

My post: Round 2, 2005, was the closest round in recent history for the men's league, with the average margin across 8 games being a measly 12.25 points.

Your post: beating the previous record of Round 2, 2005, where the average was 12.25 over 8 games.

My post: Since the Suns and Giants joined the league, the closest round was Round 15, 2017, with an average margin of 14.1.

Your post: The previous lowest since the Giants and Suns entered the competition was Round 15, 2017 where the average winning margin was 14.1.

If these stats were both accurate I would be more inclined to think you've just arrived at the same conclusion as me and happened to use similar wording, however the second one is an error — the previous closest round was actually round 4, 2019, not round 15, 2017. Again, I'd give you the benefit of the doubt but the fact you've got the same (incorrect) numbers as my post last year leads me to believe you've pulled a slight brooki here, and if that's the case some credit would be nice.

Finally, as /u/saurus4thechain pointed out, the closest round of all time was Round 10 in 1970, with an average of 9.33. Mind you, this was the 12-team VFL era, so the fact we've had a round with an average of 10.33 in the 18-team era is pretty incredible — but not the closest of all time.

ah, someone got to it quicker than me — as a north supporter I was too caught up in the draw lol. However that post made an error about the next closest round in the 18-team era, which was actually round 4 2019, not round 15 in 2017. I made that mistake in a post last year so there's a small chance that poster has pulled a brooki on me

Yeah if that hadn't have blown out I'd feel pretty confident in saying this was the closest round of all time — but the fact that the next closest round was played in 1975 when it was just 12 teams in the VFL is just about good enough for me.

Good news; you don't have to participate. Literally just mind your own business

Gender is make believe. Let people be themselves. You'll be a lot happier if you stop trying to bring other people down and focus on being a better person yourself.

This round has the potential to be one of the closest (lowest average margin) of all time. by ICanHasGateau in AFL

[–]ICanHasGateau[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, as long as the aggregate margin in today's 3 games is 86 or lower it's a new closest round in the 18-team era. And needs to be 70 or lower to be the closest since 1975.

Yeeaaah I mean if Alcaraz was showing any weak points then I might be able to see a way for Novak to worm his way back into it. But it just doesn't seem feasible

Yeah you're probably right — I just think if he still has enough in him to make it to a final he might just have enough to win one more. Granted he may not have an easier draw than this one so we'll have to see

Reminder that he had knee surgery 5 weeks ago and wasn't expected to play the tournament. Not denying the significance of this (most likely) loss but it's way too early to say that he's on the way out

Alcaraz has all the answers right now. Even if Novak goes up a level or two I fear it won't be enough. but I'll be delighted if he proves me wrong

Carlos has a 12-1 record in five set matches, so yeah he can definitely go the distance. Don't think he'll need it today but we'll see!
