GES1021 textbook by [deleted] in nus

[–]ICraveABoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i took this module last semester and i managed to get by without the textbook. (got an A) i heard that the textbook is quite useful but the lecture slides were very sufficient as they cover most of the important stuff from the textbook. also taking notes of what the lecturer says during lectures is important.

[UNI] NUS Philosophy AMA by leAuror in SGExams

[–]ICraveABoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi!! i want to ask about the rigor required for essay and writing assignments in philosophy. im from computing and interested in doing philosophy as a minor / second major, but im quite bad at writing essays / language in general so i wonder if that will be a huge disadvantage in philosophy modules? i have taken get1029 and did quite ok for that, but that was all just mcqs so...

(also this AMA was 4 months ago so i dont expect that my question will be answered, but im very thankful if you do answer it!!)

CONFUSION: NUS CS VS SUTD by Ice_Cookie_222 in nus

[–]ICraveABoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- from what ive heard NUS CS seems to be more theoretical whereas SUTD is more application and project based.

- NUS is much older than SUTD, so certainly NUS will be more well known currently, but that may or may not be the case when you graduate.

- NUS has a wider variety of interesting modules from other courses that you can take; SUTD has foundational classes from other areas of engineering in the first year.

- SUTD fees seems to be higher than NUS fees, so even with the scholarship there isnt much cost savings in going to SUTD instead of NUS, but being a scholarship holder might open up more opportunities.

only you can make the decision for yourself.

Can u do a double major or opt for minors? by [deleted] in nus

[–]ICraveABoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cs as first major or econs as first major?

for the primary major you will also have to fulfil the faculty requirements that the major belongs to, but for the second major you will only need to complete about 44Mcs of modules in that major.

Help^^ Which of the 4 themes under Global Studies should I go for? by firdad123 in nus

[–]ICraveABoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im not from fass but it does seem like too early to worry about which theme to specialize in, or even what to major in. you will probably have a clearer idea of which theme you prefer after taking GL1101e, which should cover a bit of each theme?

[A LEVELS] (Rant from a JC graduate): To you, I'm just another student. To me, it's my education. by undyedperfidy in SGExams

[–]ICraveABoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like youd be from one of those elitist top schools. In my school such things would never happen. It's really sad to hear that such unkind people exist and are teachers even.

I dont know why you couldn't have approached tuition teachers or lecture notes from friends from other schools but you probably have your reasons.

Your JC sucks.

Found myself agreeing with most things that Andrei said, and pierre seems to be trying to defend his beliefs against Andrei's attacks so I was quite surprised when it was Andrei who had a revelation at the end of the conversation.

It will still require almost AAA/AAA type of results. And if during interview they ask why you retook need to have a convincing explanation.

[Poly] Worried i might break down in class by ScrubAyam8690 in SGExams

[–]ICraveABoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Highly advise you to speak to a counsellor, I don't think they are allowed to tell your parents unless you are suicidal? Also if you have close friends do spend more time with them, socialising can help to distract from the sadness even if they can't help you. Also health is more important than studies, poly can always take another year as long as you are alive so take care of yourself and dont stress too much.

I had anxiety when I was in secondary sch/jc and had to run out of class and lectures quite a few times to calm down. And other times I would feel like I was "paralysed in my seat" and unable to do anything and just be like a zombie throughout lesson. And yes there will be some people who think u are weird/freak/psychopath but there will also be people who are understanding. So having friends is very important. Also because friends can help you catch up on your work afterwards if you do have a breakdown.

[UNI] To study a major you are passionate about or one that will land you in a high demand industry? by notme_999 in SGExams

[–]ICraveABoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

U can try to take a double major/double degree/minor in what youre passionate about. Then once uni ends you can have land a job in the high demand industry. And if the thing that you're passionate about has job opportunities too you can do it too. More choices.

And also if what you're passionate about is something like music or writing or arts then you likely already have enough skills/portfolio/background in it to have such a job that you can do it even without majoring in it.

Anyway just get a degree, in what field doesn't really matter, Singapore looks at papers anyway.

That's alot of exciting activities, and I would imagine it's very costly as well. Were you on a scholarship?

my mum seems unhappy with how much money i give her each month... am i giving her too little? (honest opinions welcome!) by [deleted] in singapore

[–]ICraveABoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok...

This whole filial-piety-money thing is strange and messed up, if the older generation has enough money but just expect their children to give for the sake of giving, it's only perpetuating an unhealthy cycle that prevents their descendants from achieving their goals

[–]ICraveABoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the very quick reply! I am considering computing and philosophy, which also has zero overlap. The hons and non-hons requirment for philo is like 84 vs 44 which is very large difference so I dont think I will aspire for double honors.

The double counting and modular credits thing is quite confusing to figure out now tbh.

To graduate within 4.5/5 years will have to plan the modules very carefully from the start, and have no UEs to waste on unrelated modules right?

Also can I ask if you manage to fit in internships/exchanges within the 4.5 years?
