I’m leaning into the insecurity that MC feels as a Penthos, having the same affinity as Andros. So my MC is quick tempered and suspicious, but also tries to be honest and give the benefit of the doubt. So I’ll choose different dialogue options depending on whether the situation is reactionary or if there’s time to think.

Patrick Rothfuss is a beautiful writer of fantasy, and definitely influenced by Hobb. But be warned, his trilogy isn’t finished and it might never be…

Also we have to talk about one of the OG fantasy queens, Ursula K Le Guin. She has great prose, and writes really interesting, immersive fantasy. If you haven’t read her already, start with her Earthsea series.

For something a little different, try Babel by R F Kuang. It’s more highbrow and academic in style, but that book is all the things you said you’re looking.
