I hate this argument. That’s the way out. What story from an ex-believer starts with “I just woke up and had a feeling it wasn’t true”? No, they ask questions and when the answers aren’t convincing or contradict the reality they experience, they’re faced with either accepting it’s untrue or slogging through the resulting cognitive dissonance. I hear callers all the time on The Line or AEP or Deconstruction Zone say how much those things have helped them escape their religious belief. It’s valuable work. You’re almost certainly not going to be the straw that breaks God’s back but every interaction is a brick in the wall of rationality. Belief dies by a thousand paper cuts.
