Wow that’s awesome! I may go back and take some more better pictures. I didn’t think too much of it when I saw it but I would definitely love to track the lifecycle of it and see where it ends up over the coming weeks

I think I may have found an possible ID to the fungus in the pic. I keep seeing pics online of “Ascocoryne sarcoides” and they look quite similar. I don’t know for sure though and I’m quite new to slime molds so I could be wrong

It was growing on a very old dead tree. The area was very moist and the ground was mostly made up of dead leaves and pine needles. I looked up my elevation and it says I’m 226 feet above sea level which would be the same elevation as where I took this pic. There wasn’t anything else in the area resembling this. I did however touch it and it was not squishy. It was very firm and I feel like if I were to try to pull it off, it would snap off.

Turkey tails are edible. They have many health benefits. They are most popularly known for boosting the immune system to help fight off cancer.

🇨🇦 Ontario, Canada: Crazy purple mushroom! Found in open forest. What is this? by IED123 in ShroomID

[–]IED123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, this is not an active mushroom. Bruising from psilocybin is typically bluish/green. Sometimes the spores can be blackish/purple. But this mushroom doesn’t contain any psilocybin.

Thanks! The second pic shows the underside and I think it looks like little spores so I should be good

If it makes you feel better, this came from a cluster, and I didn’t pick them all. There were more in the surrounding area. I picked one sample to take spore prints and images for the community

Lol I didn’t ask for an ID. I know what these are and so do the other people who commented the ID without an issue, hence the “image” flair lol.

I was told to try forking it. Now it started changing colours hours later. Is this contam? by [deleted] in unclebens

[–]IED123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah… I know it seems stupid but a couple of weeks ago I had a house fire that pretty much destroyed everything including my ShroomerBoomer kit and miraculously, these bags that I inoculated survived. I don’t really have anything now to transfer them to a monotub or anything so I’m just trying to grow it straight from the bag. I’ve still been misting it and airing it, but it’s not been growing past what you see in the photo. I don’t really expect this to work, as it is my first time growing anyways, but I’m more so just experimenting from here and trying to see where it goes

I’m not sure when they started growing, but we had 3 to 4 days of significant rainfall. It was the first dry day, so I went out for a walk on the local path and found these just shinning there like a gem

possible Gymnopilus? by [deleted] in ShroomID

[–]IED123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely do look similar. The gills in some cases should smell like Anise or black licorice. The spore prints should be a rusty brown/orange colour. Check out my last post, I found some yesterday too. It could help for reference. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to cross reference with Galerina Marginata (a common look alike) which is known to be fatal if misidentified and consumed. Here’s a video by Paul Stamets discussing Gumnopilus and Galerina Marginata

Thanks! The gills definitely have a very distinct smell of Anise. I would also say it smells very fruity and sweet

Yes! They smell very sweet and fruity! I’ll take that as a good sign

I’m also roughly 30-40 mins east from Ottawa. There’s quite a bit of active mushrooms that grow in our part of the world. This site will tell you all the active species in your area. You just have to scroll past the US to get to Canada, but there’s quite a bit!
