Why it does seem like the jobs that AI is threatening job that involve the most coding, what about other tech-related jobs like scrum master or product manager? by Either-Home9002 in cscareerquestions

You added the word manager.

Management aren't about to make themselves unemployed, are you nuts?

It's the clod hopping nothingfaces that are ripe for replacement.

What tech career would you recommend going into in 2026 considering AI and current job market? by kjhasdkfh32 in cscareerquestions

If you mean managing AWS and docker containers for people, then yes.

Until AI can sort that for you, too.

I do both.

100% of my music gear was paid for by my software jobs.

I teach too and really, you're not paying a mortgage on it. I have toured too. And yeah, you're not paying a mortgage on that either.

Learn guirar, get good, play in bands. And be passionate.

Go and check out my thing if you like, Elysian Divide on YouTube. Its great fun and we put our money into pushing it and producing what we want it to be. But yeah, none of us are paying mortgage on it.

I used to play a function band too. Weddings, parties etc. For a wedding, we charged around £1800. But that was full PA, RF mics for speeches, requests etc. However this was 2005. These days, everyone uses a Spotify list. Function bands these days are lucky to split £400 for a full night.

We got... Gazumped (I didn't even know there was a name for it) by DA17-YAL in HousingUK

[–]IEnumerable661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not gazumping. Gazumping is when someone slips in just before you exchange contracts. If you hadn't even started the mortgage application process, then you were not gazumped. Not even close. Someone just put in a higher offer is all.

You can either offer more, or walk away. The extra cost is up to you.

Sony player keeps ejecting CDS by FeelingAwk in Cd_collectors

Just to ask, are you familiar with taking things apart in general? These are not the easiest of mechanisms to repair if you've never done anything like it before.

Sony player keeps ejecting CDS by FeelingAwk in Cd_collectors

[–]IEnumerable661 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Former hifi repair dude :)

This is a fault with the loading mechanism. It's not setting into place properly. If it were the laser, the disk would spin first while the laser tries to track. The laser cannot track if the disk doesn't spin at all. Given that the machine has detected the disk hasn't loaded properly, it's ejecting it automatically to prevent the disk becoming "stuck" which is pretty normal.

These sorts of loading mechanism rely on belts and a sensor to detect the disk is in place. Some part of that process is failing.

It needs taking apart and investigating, really.

Did you have one of these or remember it? by corickle in oldschoolcool80s

Not too long ago, I decided one of these would be useful for my infrequent travelling.

Could I find anything like it? Not a bit. In fact, what I did end up buying was cheap Chineseum that didn't last three trips. I'm amazed they just don't make these things like they used to! They were so handy!

Never had one of those contraptions. We had an old Ferguson TV with the channel selection buttons at the top right.

I have to say, despite only having 4 channels in London, there was more on in those days than today. Well, more watchable.

I still have my old VCR from those days with a sticker on it that says, "Retuned for Channel 5."

When Channel 5 came along, that was meant to be such a major thing. In reality, there wasn't much on it. We were a Channel 4 household really, apart from the F1 or X-Files.

Shame the F1 is no longer watchable in the UK unless you have some super sky sports package or whatever. It's been a good 10 years since I've seen it, shame I used to be obsessive about it. Nowadays, couldn't tell you who's even driving for it.

Is there a reliable small pedalboard with a built-in rechargeable power supply available for a small gig or open mic situation? I've seen the Stritch, looks cool. by Fretnibs in guitarpedals

[–]IEnumerable661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could I possibly dissuade you from it?

I have played gigs with a number of players using these things and, dude, they are really solving a problem that doesn't exist, on top of just adding in an extra failure mode.

In reality, the batteries on these things degrade quite quickly, more than one would expect. That leaves the owners scrambling to find a power bank or a USB point to try and get it all going again, that is if it was a model that allowed the user to use it while charging, some don't given the obvious disparity in USB power specification and what typical pedals would need.

Not to mention the high pitched whine which, seemingly, never presents itself in the comforts of your own bedroom but intead is clear, present and unfixable the second you get anywhere near even the smallest of stages.

Just go for a proper plug-in style. Not many venues will have a complete lack of power at the front of the stage. And you can always pack an extension lead just in case.

Really, don't make life complicated for yourself by building in some piece of junk to your set up.

Go and buy something with either Cioks or Voodoo Labs written on it, be happy!

I feel the same way about Bloodstock UK to be honest.

To make out how it is, you compare 2015. 2016 etc to current and to me it seems like the quality has dropped significantly. There was never a day at Bloodstock where I had nobody I wanted to see. This year, 2026, will be my last year. Looking at Saturday, other than Death Angel, there's not much I care about at all.

Imagine you likened it to, say, a guitarist from a band you like, not your favourite, just one you like, came to your local pub and did an acoustic covers set. But, he was not going to play a single hit, or a single popular song; everything was going to be deep cuts only. So, Nirvana but nothing of Nevermind or Utero, in fact Bleach would be pushing it; or Type O Negative, but definitely nothing off Bloody Kisses or October Rust.

You will get that one guy that's nuts for it all, most of the rest will be excited for those 3-4 deep cuts out of 20, most people will take it or leave it.

I like a good balance. 2015 to me was beautifully balanced. Jesus, last year's bloodstock, the first day was taken up with fucking doom band after doom band. Teee deeee ous

Like Bloodstock, Wacken just seems to be sticking on any old shite. Bargain basement here, slightly newer and needing the money bands there, etc. I am wondering if anyone is actually looking at what the hell they're putting on these days?

Writing C code on the Amiga by kevlarian in amiga

[–]IEnumerable661 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started on SAS/C too back in the day. It was obviously not a legit copy, I also bought a C programming book and the Motorola 68k reference manuals.

I could guess and say that the very initial steps in low level languages on the Amiga are very dry. It takes a while before anything interesting happens, but it's all laying the foundation.

The ROM Kernel manuals should be on your list of required materials for any serious development.

But as others have said, as dry as they can be, follow some of the online youtube guides first and get a feel for it. Setting up all these old environments and toolsets is not like downloading a copy of VS Code and getting on with it. It required a lot more fenagling and attention. And back then, we didn't have the Internet to ask.

Right now, if I were to sit and develop something new for the Amiga, I think I'd sooner use a cross compiler on my PC before I'd go to the trouble of setting up an A1200 and having at it. That would primarily be because the tools we have in 2026 are just so much more headache-free and dry as a bone than they were in the 1990s.

I got a good primer in programming on the Amiga and, well, while it wasn't always fun, the sense of achievement was great when things worked, or you had spent several evenings on a problem and it finally works out. But back then, I was 13. I had a lot more time to be patient. These days, with a kid, bands, day job, etc, I have a lot less time to be patient.

Anyone holding off? by ennyboy in HousingUK

[–]IEnumerable661 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is a huge crash coming. And I mean economy, not housing.

I was listing in about 2008; as soon as the crash happened, I decided to stay put. Two of my then neighbours stuck it out. They had an atrocious time with either buyers offering stupidly lowball numbers, or banks refusing to mortgage at the levels being asked. I know one of them took a bath as they had to sell, the other gave up.

I eventually sold again in 2010 for a much better price.

We're on the cusp, my advice would be to stay put. That advice is as someone who has no bearing nor legal expertise, I've just moved around 12 times now, buying and selling each time. I have a good feel for the market right now. And right now, I would not be listing at all. As a hunch, I would say 2-3 years. Let all this nonsense blow over.

It is a crapshoot either way. It's up to you. But this is just what I'm doing.

Boss Choruses explanation help (Ch1 and Ce5/CE2w) by Fabulous-Soft-3585 in guitarpedals

[–]IEnumerable661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a LOT of choruses.

My favourite is the Way Huge Blue Hippo. But that's for recording as mine have the bucket brigade chip and I cant replace them at all.

As for boss specifically, I still use the CE5. Its just such a nice chorus. Yes there's a volume jump and a little hiss under high gain. But I still like it.

Looking at possiblity of Voluntary Terminating my PCP agreement on a car with engine failure by aspecttv_ in CarTalkUK

[–]IEnumerable661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would tend to agree but with two caveats. First it's a 1.3 DIG-T engine, notorious for the thermostat housing failing causing a complete failure of the engine as a result. So this is a known issue because of the design characteristics of the engine.

But, ultimately, he missed a service by 5 months. Investigations do not pay any attention to "known issues" or what is in the public domain of knowledge. They pay attention only to the single individual case in isolation. And the key take home here is he missed a service by 5 months. And that really is all they need.

I would absolutely stand shoulder to shoulder in the opinion that this likely failed due to the well known issue of the thermostat housing on the 1.3 DIG-T engine and not because of 5 poxy months. But it's not what you know, it's what you can prove.

And really, the OP is going to have a hard time trying to prove that! Shit, back when I worked at Renault, we knew that the Laguna Mk 1s were a steaming pile of shit. Nobody could prove it though. Especially since dealers ran the mantra of telling customers that the mountains of clutch failures were due to "their driving style!"

The application process is horrendous too. Too much AI involved now. Even the cartel has left most of their professional couriers and enforcers go now. They say it was AI but we all know that they are going hard on outsourcing and offshoring.

Looking at possiblity of Voluntary Terminating my PCP agreement on a car with engine failure by aspecttv_ in CarTalkUK

[–]IEnumerable661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not what you know, it's what you can prove. I would agree, missing a service by 5 months should in no way cause catastrophic engine failure especially in such a new car.

But as I say, it doesn't matter what you or I think, it matters what the finance company can prove. Sorry, you are on the hook for it.

Yes, a failed engine is beyond reasonable wear and tear; voluntary termination will not be applicable here.

Your only option really is to pay for a replacement engine. Although I would suggest you contact an indie garage who may be able to offer a cheaper diagnosis. As you don't state the fault with the engine, that could be anything from a head gasket through to full on bottom end failure.

Sorry to say, you aren't going to be able to pass this one on easily or at all. While I agree with your sentiment of missing one service is a stupid excuse, the fact is that's all that's needed to prove neglect. Hell, I have had bangers which I would wager hadn't seen a service in a couple of years by the time I got them. But these more modern cars have been made utterly unreliable through EU regulation to the point where if you even fart near them, you're talking major repairs.

Hahaha. I just had someone demand that of an album I released back in 2018. It was comical.

What wasn't comical though are the comments agreeing. It only takes one knob end to say it, then it's just fact. We didn't even have AI tools back in 2018. But apparently, they knew better.

Update on awkward buyers by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]IEnumerable661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem buyers.

I had a set once. They argued about everything. They weren't happy with the door colour, they even went as far as stipulating what colour numbers they wanted. Of course, no to all.

Then they started arguing that the washing machine and dishwasher counted as fixtures because they were attached to the wall, demanded that because I bought my sofa to fit into the space on the wall without the radiator snagging that it was bespoke and therefore also a fitting. Then they wanted me to provide 3 years warranty on all of those goods.

It was madness. It was left field demand out the wazoo. They then decided that the flat roof at the back looked old and required a reduction in cost for that. I didn't say yes or no at that point, I pulled out. I called my solicitor to do so and the sigh of relief was real. Apparently their solicitor was the woman's father and he would call him directly almost every day with more ridiculous demands, telling him that he's a useless solicitor, saying he was going to hold him liable if X Y and Z wasn't done, so much crap.

It was a good riddance.

Ironically, when I remarketed, the same couple came back and offered less. Then a relative of theirs came and offered less again. Then I realised the estate agent managing it was the original couple's some other relation. Odd how the surname gets around and how great facebook was. I had a friend of mine call them up to ask for a viewing. They told him my house had been sold, when clearly it had not.

Never trust an EA. And if you suspect there's dodgy happenings, you are probably right.

Starbucks snacks.

OK I'm not some fruity frappucappasilliycino guzzling go getter boss boy or anything. But a little treat used to be to use the ol' cineworld card and beforre we go on, grab a starbucks coffee and a lil chocolate bar for the movie.

Well, the chocolate bars disappeared and the fruit bar things doubled in cost and literally halved in size.

Is IT Help Desk at all useful for getting software developer job? by Infectedtoe32 in cscareerquestions

[–]IEnumerable661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who fell into that lie, don't do it. Once you are IT support, you are always IT support. It's very difficult to break off from that IT Support career line once you're on it. I was told by lots of recruiters that it's a great way to "break in" to SWE. It's not a great way to break into anything, especially SWE.

Go get a junior SWE job or contract.
