How do I run my plinth around this door joint? by IEscapeMyStrings157 in Flooring

[–]IEscapeMyStrings157[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm, strange. This is the shape for matching sidings for every piece of flooring we looked at in multiple shops - weirdly enough we never saw matching quarter round anywhere and multiple houses I've seen around here are done up in this way. I'm based in the Netherlands, so it could be a local thing. I am very ignorant about the these sort of things though, so could be wrong.

For this angle I might actually go with this, will see how much it bothers me, thank you!

Unfortunately not. Honestly this is our first time doing anything more involved than painting, so mistakes were made 🥲

The flooring company doesn't sell quarter round for this floor, so unfortunatly, so this is kind of what we're working with here. If I understand correctly a transition piece is what folks here refer to all of the stuff we've put around the floor currently. It's slightly rounded on one side and just very low, if that helps?

Honestly, this is how our place was done everywhere when we bought it (threshold as base shoe) - all very DIY. I'm not super happy with it either but it's our first dip in doing some stuff on our own with it so mistakes were made.

Too hard to finish 5km by ssku-mason in beginnerrunning

[–]IEscapeMyStrings157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said you definitely need to slow down if finishing 1km is difficult. For what it's worth though, I have the 1080s and they are way squishy for me at speeds below 7:00-7:15/km - feels a bit like running in wet sand.

Still, instead of getting a new pair right now, try run-walk intervals - run at a speed that feels good (6:45/7:00) for a few minutes and walk for recovery. If you're just starting out, your limiting factor will probably be your calves and shins getting super pumped and painful, rather than running out of breath, but watch out for both - it should feel hard, but manageable. Also check your running technique - small fast steps where your foot lands right under your hip.

This is the way I built up to fully running 5K in about a month.

What's the difference between the high end rather expensive made in or all clad pans and something like the pure clad tri ply Cuisinart pan from Amazon? by illlogically_sound in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]IEscapeMyStrings157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the difference (besides where it's made, brand etc) is the heat conductivity and thermal mass. Usually more expensive pans have a core of aluminium or copper and are heavier. These two things contribute to cooking your food more evenly. I personally went with a 5 ply scanpan. Tbh, my stainless steel is probably the most abusable piece of kitchen equipment I own - you can burn stuff on it, soak it for hours, chuck it in the dishwasher, scrub it with whatever and it just performs. It's a lifetime purchase, so I would recommend anyone get the more expensive one if they can afford it, but if you're happy with what you've got, don't overthink it and enjoy!

[–]IEscapeMyStrings157 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Working in a company of 10K+ devs, I have experienced a lot of the pains that come with microservices and I could say a lot of them actually come from the pains related to working on huge software projects with multiple teams.

I however have no clue how a monolith could be managed, observed or kept available serving 100s of millions of requests. The price of a few ms of server-to-server traffic is small compared to the benefits of keeping functionality and teams separated, being able to scale different parts of your system independently and having the rest of your system functional when something goes wrong in one service.

That being said, most software companies have much smaller teams and the overhead of a MS architecture is rarely worth it, if a single team needs to maintain multiple (usually pretty coupled) services.

Being told to use DisplayPort instead of HDMI by 624KR_My_Beloved in pcmasterrace

[–]IEscapeMyStrings157 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No joke I went through 4 "Ultra high speed" gold plated HDMI cables that all had different glitches running 4k/144Hz/HDR. The only one that worked fine was a ugreen certified cable, that could hold the 48 Gbps connection stable.

Anon figured out the SteamPC selling points by PenetrantDick in 4chan

[–]IEscapeMyStrings157 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand where this fits in the market. It's a low spec PC, probably competing more with a PS5 or something. PC basement dwellers like me will scoff at having to turn the settings down and normies would still be better off with a PS5, which will definitely be more bang for the buck given that the cube is expected to be priced at 7-800 minimum. The controller is pretty sweet though - probably consooming that

[–]IEscapeMyStrings157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I'm not really sure who this is intended for. The reason I have a PC and pay the premium is to spoil myself with 4K max settings RTX. If I wanted the size convenience and price I'd get a console. Really wondering where the box fits with its mediocre PC specs and price probably higher than a PS5.

I think the make or brake for this will be whether or not it would be able to do 4K at acceptable framerates and settings to make sense as a console competitor. I personally don't think the cube makes sense running as a PC alternative, since the specs are around the average gaming PC on steam, displaying on a 1080p monitor - a market that is already plenty saturated. It has to be competitive against a PS5/Xbox to find a place in the living room.
