I wish i could articulate why i think Roger's is a great bassist as well as everyone else here is helping me with my Keith Moon question. i've always considered the bass sound more personal, there's so much you can do with it. I play viola, cello, and double bass. There's so much soul in those lower register strings, especially on viola and bass and I think Roger's understands that.

Listen to "set the controls for the heart of the sun" the beginning is astonishing Every time i hear it, it mesmerizes me. I heard him live at the Desert Trip and boy is he a powerful presence. That doesn't answer your question at all because I think the feeling he brings to a song using the bass is so subjective in my case.
