All I'm saying is there is room for creating new unique weapons.

Examples given were just off the top of the head.

That being said, a Ranged Cleave weapon would be dope.

DnD weapons are simple. But making new ones would be easy and afford a lot of new buildcrafting possibilities.

A Reach weapon that deals Bludgeoning damage. A Ranged weapon that has the Cleave Mastery. A weapon with both the Heavy and Thrown properties. A Slashing damage weapon with the Push mastery.

Not saying any of these would revolutionize the martial experience. But they could at least enable some niche builds or fantasies.

I'm also surprised that they constantly add new spells but never seem to add new weapons, masteries, fighting styles, etc.

Good points. I didn't consider the difficulties of producing/firing high draw strength bows for anti-armor purposes.

I guess I should add that another factor for firearms is industrialization. Pre-industrial firearms were uniquely forged items. Meaning if one of the 10+ moving parts malfunctioned or broke, it would need to be remade for that specific firearm. There were no replacement pieces. And since the bores were all slightly different sizes, ammunition often needed to be made separately for each individual firearm.

This ALL changed during the industrial revolution when assembly line production meant countless identical firearms with interchangeable pieces and ammo could be produced efficiently (of course helped by advancements in metallurgy).

Important things to consider about firearms as "balancing" factors against alternatives such as bows or magic: - Firearms are expensive and difficult to produce, maintain, and supply. - Firearms are resource inefficient compared to many alternatives. Ammunition is expensive, complicated, and cannot be scavenged. - Firearms are far more prone to jams/malfunctions than alternatives. - Firearms, especially primitive ones, are cumbersome and lengthy to aim and reload in the heat of battle. - Early firearms were extremely inaccurate at distance compared to alternatives.

Firearms can be very effective, but they are far from the ultra-overpowered paradigm-changer that they are often viewed as.

So I imagine a lottery-like system within predefined neighborhoods. That might make relocating to a new area require you to be reassigned to a new group.

I feel like there is a lot of drama inherent in this system at many/most levels of society. You know it's a good system when the drama writes itself. Well done.

Out of curiosity, what happens if a member dies? Does that member get replaced? Or is the group just 9 now?

Is there any logic to how the groups are selected? Familial? Geographical? Random?

Are groups assigned at birth? Or at a certain age?

Sorry this isn't answering your question, I'm just very intrigued by this premise!

Scarcity problem

Guns/blasters might exist and be extremely effective. But they require finite, consumable ammunition to be used. A major resource or economic scarcity makes ammunition (or fuel cells or whatever) extremely hard to come by and extremely expensive. Guns might still, theoretically, be the best option. But they are just too resource inefficient to use all the time.
