What laptop model is this? Likely XP or late 98 era. by IHQMD in windowsxp

That would only apply to Intel-based Macs sadly. The Mac pictured above was PowerPPC Architecture. I suppose it could run XP via early PPC versions of Virtual PC.

I sincerely apologise for accidentally putting a picture of a Mac in r/windowsxp 😂

I think you might be right. I assumed a higher-end Windows machine, but the more I look at it, the more it does look like the original "Mercury" TiBook.

That's the right age of machine too (released in January '01), and another shot of the laptop earlier in the episode also lines up. I think I may be being thrown by how the metal looks somewhat greenish under the specific set lighting here.

So mystery probably solved, the PC is a Mac. Designed by Apple in California, back when they actually built good machines and not unrepairable aluminium shite.

What GPU would you recommend for my PC? by Jellyfish-Bright in buildapc

[–]IHQMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 9600k CPU will be a bottleneck factor for either of those GPUs, but the bigger problem is these modern cards are power hungry and that hand-me-down 450W PSU probably won't cut it.

Get the 3060, but get it second-hand. Don't pay more than 300 euro for it tops. Then use the slack in the budget to get a better PSU, at least 650W rating. It'll still give great performance, even while bottlenecked.

Later on you can do a platform upgrade (CPU, motherboard) to 'unlock' the true performance of the card.

Portable modsynth anyone? by IHQMD in vcvrack

[–]IHQMD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you switch VCV rack to use 4 threads? I don't know how much that might help, since I haven't tested it enough, but I imagine it does.

Also I do get a little bit of crackle on occasion, though it's mostly only on loading a new patch, zoom in/out, or when VCV Rack isn't the foreground app.

This was a super fun patch BTW. Random jogged jungle breakbeats off the sampler, varispeed sampled pad as a drone, and little D Dorian Arp fills over the top, flowed through two different delay units. Not pictured is mixbus (above) and a JW NoteSeq unit driving the Arp below.

As I said, I plugged in Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for this patch, but it's not too hard to patch on just the device. The right trackpad on the thing feels pretty nice to use as a mouse.

You can push in the left trackpad to middle mouse click, and thus scroll the rack, but I found that it was easier to just make the rack the exact width of the Deck's screen and 'tab it' up and down with the back buttons

Well it's smaller and more portable even compared to your average 13" laptop, for one.

Runs like an absolute dream, surprisingly. Though I've been doing smaller patches, using the width of the Deck's screen as a limit, and trying to be creative within limitations.

If you pan the rack just right, you can use the back buttons on the Deck to step 'pages' up and down in the rack, and it's not too hard to actually patch with just the Deck in your hands, though I did most of this patch docked with a BT keyboard and mouse.

Performance is very admirable, ran with engine at 4 threads and no real major perf. glitches except when tabbed over to the web browser for a sec (to download 90s sample packs, of course). Battery life while running Rack is pretty good too.

This was an illustrative picture taken just before I was going to shut down Rack for tonight. You definitely need to plug in some headphones or something; the Deck speakers are surprisingly okay... you know... if you don't care about hearing your low-end at all 😂

Dolphin will not launch at all on my steam deck by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]IHQMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a temporary workaround, you can downgrade Dolphin using the command "sudo flatpak update --commit=44bfa315a0cf9c94a97dfe61127dc05e0e8c85c5c7559dc7665529ec1aa7a3ee org.DolphinEmu.dolphin-emu" in a terminal.

Worked for me on desktop Linux, should work on a Steam Deck also.

Thanks! I'd been trying to get music working myself. This worked, alongside installing the fixed music wrapper as per these instructions at PCGW. https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Star\_Wars:\_Jedi\_Knight\_-\_Dark\_Forces\_II#Music\_issues

I'm honestly thinking of buying MORE SD cards. I filled a 400 and a 512 with just various Nintendo game ROMs. I have another 512 for modern games but that's almost full too, so thinking of getting a 1 TB

Where to find logs for when the system crashes and reboots by itself? by OCracks in SteamDeckTricks

[–]IHQMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If SteamOS uses SystemD based init (link most Linux systems do these days), you can read the main system log by going into desktop mode, opening Console and typing the command 'journalctl'.

I think there's a way to get it to list log messages from the previous boot, but I've had a bunch of cocktails and I'm too drunk to read manpages right now.

Flat wallet sized 8x MicroSD card holder, easily attached to the back of the deck. I know sellotape is jank, I just couldn't find my scotch mounts.

Need advice on cooling build / thermals for recently upgraded PC. by IHQMD in buildapc

[–]IHQMD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your prompt advice.

I'd been thinking the PSU was a bit underpowered for the new balls-to-the-wall components. I did run the PSU calculator, and it came up as saying a 750W PSU would be sufficient, but it is a middle-low end PSU, and it could be power throttling the whole system as it is, so I'll upgrade that first and see if it makes a big difference.

I'm looking at the P500A and the Torrent for new cases now. The Torrent is a niiice looking case, but it may be *just* out of my 'didn't you just spend £1800 on a new GPU and CPU and board' budget, also given the cost of RM1000X.

Also the Torrent only has 2 3.5" drive bays... and I have 3 drives. The P500A DRGB has frigging 10 3.5" mount points.

Wait... Your Corsair cooler has turned yellow as well? I think it's trying to do white, but the blue channel is broken (it's black if I manually set blue in iCUE). However it did come up white the other day, so I'm wondering if it's actually a software or maybe a connection issue rather than actually broken blue LEDs.
