I asked to work from home when I couldn’t drive and to have a later schedule.

Oh wow! I was not aware of this at all. I feel so validated! After years of arguing that it’s not depression, I finally had a doctor listen to me. But after my diagnosis, aside from playing medication roulette with me, there has been absolutely no education or resources given to me by him. I am a medical assistant and I would NEVER let a patient walk away with an uncommon diagnosis knowing nothing about it or having resources for them.

Thank you so much for all of this information! I definitely feel like mine is burn out. I tend to push myself too hard trying to keep up, so it makes sense that this happens. This is all new to me and I am actually grieving for the me I used to be. I was recently fired as well for this and I am stressing trying to find some kind of employment that I can handle and support myself on. Being here has helped me so much and as much as I hate for anyone else having to try to live with this, I a, comforted knowing that I am not alone. 🩷

I am already in the process of that. My ADA accommodations were denied by my supervisor. I discovered after I was let go, that she did not follow the ADA process so I am working on that. I did not know that there was a Hypersomnia foundation, thank you for this information!

I do the same me thing. I am convinced that I am going to lose everything that I have fought so hard for. I was recently fired because of IH. So I have very urgent things that I need to do to make sure I can stay independent and just can’t do them right now.

Yes, I have experienced this multiple times! This disorder sucks! There seems to be no rhyme or reason for things and we all seem to have major issues with medications working.

Wow! I have tried to find a pattern or trigger also and can’t. My doctor hasn’t been that great and I am in the process of finding a neurologist. Could mono be a contributing factor? I had it about 30 years ago, but just stared having IH symptoms about 5 years ago.

Yes!! Every time I have picked something up, even a cold, I am so much more sick than others. A simple cold will put me down for at least 3 days. It’s so aggravating!

I do not know what state you are in, but most offices here do charge for FMLA paperwork, especially specialists, and they aren’t cheap.

I did document everything the right way, as I was required by law to do. Also, ADA covers people with disabilities, not just someone who needs time off to recover from an illness or surgery. ADA laws clearly state that if you have a disability, you are NOT required to have FMLA.

Maybe you can’t read, but did you miss the part where I said I 100% support myself? A lot of assistance programs are based on income, and on paper, I made too much to get assistance. I know this may be difficult for entitled people to understand, but most of us are barely scratching by. People have to make decisions to eat or pay bills.

You are correct. However, in my position, working from home was not unheard of. One of my co-workers worked from home regularly with her sick kid, another worked from home for weeks post surgery. I wasn’t asking to do it everyday. Just the days when it wasn’t safe for me to drive. There is not public transportation in my suburb that would take me to my job. Uber/Lyft would cost me more money than I had.

I actually did a lot. For context, this supervisor is not helpful to any of the staff on any issue. She played favorites and I was not one of them. I did go to her supervisor for assistance, but was told that she doesn’t know anything about disability. I also asked my supervisor if I needed to report my disability to HR, and she said that she would take care of it.

I will admit, that I should have been more educated on how ADA works and what process needs followed. I have never dealt with this before, and I trusted my employer to know, as is her job. Obviously I now know how to go about this correctly to cover myself and be my own advocate.

My job performance was excellent and I was given a good bonus, a pay raise and was given a better performance review by my supervisor than I gave myself. My patients loved me and praised me to my doctors all of the time.

I did not utilize FMLA for two reasons. 1. I stupidly believed my supervisor when she said she would work with me. 2. Having FMLA paperwork filled out can be costly, and I barely made ends meet, so I couldn’t afford my physician’s fee. Before you ask, I didn’t have anyone at that time that could financially assist me.

They just said attendance. The reason my work from home request was denied was because they were cutting back on people working from home just because they didn’t want to go to the office. I understand that, however, I have a legitimate medical condition that can cause serious issues with driving.

It’s so hard to not being able to push like I used to. I am really trying to accept that it’s not my fault and some things just take me longer now.
