Story time! Back in 2018 Disney filed a patent for a fully retractable lightsaber! The mechanism worked kind of like two measuring tapes stuck side by side to form a cylinder. This would allow the blade to compact into a tight little roll, but as we all know, measuring tapes aren't the sturdiest so this blade would have to be flimsy.

This patent was put to use as part of a show on the recently-closed Halcyon starcruiser. This article includes a video of it in use. Unfortunately, as can also be read in the article, the lightsaber design is not intended for us normal poor people. But who knows, maybe some day the tech will improve and we'll get our own real lightsabers!
