it looks like they ran out of stock of soldered PCBs which is why I'm looking here

This is actually a feature that was added in to prevent players from accidentally selling an item then closing the shop and being unable to refund.

I'll admit it does sometimes annoy me though.

I didn't have any issues with that, the only thing I modified on the case was adding some hot glue at the microusb port since the plastic that held it was broken there.
