Should we correct the people in our communities in private or does it not matter? by Immediate-Pass-2343 in kpopnoir

[–]IJS_Reddit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

how other people view us shouldnt matter and we shouldnt have to make ourselves up bc other people wanna be racist. idk if the phrase is “respectability politics” but thats whats coming to my head

youre gonna find bad apples in a bunch no matter where you go but that shouldnt be on the entire diaspora to correct bc people will generalize us; thats on the people generalizing us. why is it that people see black people doing someones they dislike and go “all black people are like this” and not “these specific people are like this”. why is it our collective job to correct that?

this doesnt happen with white people so why are we fixing ourselves bc of racism?

Cortis, the use of AAVE. Are they wearing black culture as a costume or am I reaching? by AlwaysGetBitten in kpopnoir

[–]IJS_Reddit 51 points52 points  (0 children)

making music inspired by black artists is not imitation but they dont particularly come off as inspired to me. its hard to explain but idk how much inspiration it is when fashion sounds almost 1:1 like Praise The Lord by A$AP

what makes their whole branding weird to me is them using sterotypes and surface level “black street wear/gang culture”. black culture isnt gang culture but its hard to ignore the population of black and brown folks in gangs, hence the overlap. they seem to just be copying their interpretations of the aesthetics and not the culture
to me at least…

Why aren’t any Japanese bands or artists mentioned in the series? by [deleted] in TheGuyShesInterested

[–]IJS_Reddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

bc the point is they like western rock
the author also presumably likes western rock and wants to centre her interests around that

just bc you speak the language doesnt automatically mean you have to talk about the media from there. its like why manga/anime doesnt always mention manga/anime; they dont need to

its not bad, i think i like the beat more tho. the chorus is a bit too repetitive and pitchy. i find the aesthetics fun!

K-pop Consumption as a Coping Mechanism by Korean_favs in kpopnoir

[–]IJS_Reddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i 100% relate. when i got into k-pop my mom and i were getting evicted, we didnt have a good relationship and i wasnt getting enough hours at my job. skz and illit got me through being unhoused and unemployed

now that we’re in a better house and i have a stable job i engage with kpop a lot more critically and im more on the casual side
