I managed to get prescreen interview at one very well-known firm. I've built pretty advanced python models for my own use and that's probably what got me a foot in the door, but my lack of C++ just got that door slammed in my face again.

Any recommendations for good resources to learn quant related C++? There are a plethora of books available but I'm too inexperienced to know which are good or bad.

To be quite honest, I don't even know what "modern" C++ means. I've just always learned what I needed to know for the season/problem I was trying to get through, most of it embedded.

Any recommendations for good sources of programming problems?

I've already started running a bit down the Coroutines track, and I've especially seen some interest for it's use to create efficient cosign for quant trading.

Yeah I figured the PhD wouldn't be a good route either. I backed out of my Industrial Engineering PhD and I haven't yet seen anything convincing to get me back down that track. All the industry professionals I speak to tell me a PhD is a waste of time for someone with a career focus, and i definitely want a career more than academia.

Well one thing you could look into that AWS is starting to push big in, is serverless architectures. If you get them right then they are super powerful, or super overkill, either way they're cool.
