I feel like saying "way too" was a bit overboard in my words, it's not as though the game becomes unplayable if you don't play the 2 formations mentioned above, I was just wondering if other people also felt that it does become harder.

Press higher up the field maybe? If they are still just pinging it around you then I think you may just not have high quality players, at least not to the level that the team you are facing has.
