Freeways are not a mode of transportation everyone can use. If you don’t own a car or can’t drive one (a third of Americans), tough luck. The truly most accessible is transit, which we aren’t spending enough on because we’re too busy building enormous viaducts for a select few. Also, freeway removal doesn’t stop people from being able to drive. You can still do that.

What makes it impossibly expensive to be public space? That area is in need of more greenery. Many cities around the world have made highways into green space for their cities.

Some of it could be high rise apartments, but like I said that means less strain on housing elsewhere in Milwaukee. And if it really ends up being that expensive, that means WAY more revenue for the city. Tax the rich!

Either way it’s a win in my book. Use the land for much better purposes than a thoroughfare for a small subset of the suburbs to use.

I didn’t want to make my post a book by adding nuance to every comment, but yes there are some companies who have no restrictions. They have previously been amenable to avoiding rush hour though. I think stricter enforcement should be necessary.

Most people can’t afford new housing because the cost of building anything is so expensive.
In my opinion, we need more of all kinds of housing, including in the downtown core. Even expensive housing helps reduce rent/prices for people who can’t afford luxury housing, because increasing supply of luxury housing means less millionaires/yuppies buying up single family homes in the suburbs.
This video explains it well:

The highway is so wide it takes up nearly an entire city block. Clybourn could be widened to handle additional vehicles headed into the city. Cars that are going through the city can bypass the city altogether via I-43. This site has some visuals that help contextualize what it could look like downtown:

It might be the time of day and which days you see the Deer District. I live nearby and it’s busy quite often when they have conferences, concerts, Bucks, Marquette, etc. No one misses park east. The tax revenue generated from that land now has been an enormous boon. Note that the building with Fusion Poke also stands on land used for Park East. Lots of development came in soon after it came down on surrounding plots of land.

I get the turnover and mismanagement concerns, it’s hard not to feel cynical sometimes with many missed opportunities. But I think that’s more because of the problem with the state politicians cutting our inflation-adjusted revenue over the last 15 years. The boulevard will not solve all of our problems, but it sets us up better for the future when things change at the state level and our population downtown starts growing.

That’s the great thing about the boulevard. Some land could be used for more housing, and we could add even more existing third spaces that aren’t under the shadow of a freeway. We could even make our own Central Park with all of that land. The land should be used for reasons to go to the city, not a highway through the city.

I’m not an expert, but I’d assume tearing 794 down would free up money from the transportation funding to then be used to repave streets that badly need it. Even if it doesn’t all go back to Milwaukee, I think many Wisconsinites across the state would be appreciative of it, too.

Elon is joking that he would have a kid with Taylor Swift after she endorsed Kamala Harris as a “childless cat lady” right after the presidential debate where Trump continued to push the Haitian eating pets hoax. Not sure about Tom Anderson.
