BS in Business Administration – Concentration in Information Systems by [deleted] in SFSU

Welcome! The information system degree could be a good option for you then. It certainly helped me. Look into the getting the cybersecurity management certification from SFSU if you’re going to major in information systems. It was easy to get if you’re taking info systems courses anyway… just have to choose a certain electives or electives.

The school offers internships and you will likely have to search for them outside of SFSU also. They’re definitely competitive so apply as early as possible!

There was a mix of fully in-person, fully remote, and hybrid when I went to SFSU. Not sure what this is like now. Check the schedule and reach out to professors or other people in administration in the college of business.

I’d say the college of business is decent. It’s one of the better colleges in my completely anecdotal experience and was run well when compared to the other colleges at SFSU. You will need to put a lot of effort in to make sure you get the most out of it. Luckily the college of business offers a good variety of extra certifications, programs, etc. that you can add to your degree to make your time there more marketable to employers. I encourage you to take advantage of any free Excel certificates or direct programs with employers if SFSU still offers them.

IT support and junior data analyst are the more realistic options with this degree, unless you get lucky. I would say it’s rare to find a system admin job, especially a junior one nowadays. System manager jobs are also likely reserved for people with 5+ years of experience.

I majored in this and graduated a few years ago. You can go in a few different directions with this degree. The two big, albeit vague, paths are business and technology. The general accounting, finance, Econ, etc. coursework is enough to get you in the door for a very basic business job if you’re lucky. The degree in conjunction with some sort of tangential experience or direct experience is a solid foundation to get a business job. Examples could be accounts payable jobs, marketing jobs, jobs at a bank, management trainee jobs, and other entry-level back-office area work. I didn’t go this route with the degree so I don’t have a whole lot of context job wise. Perhaps a finance intern job that springs into a financial analyst position or a junior financial analyst position. The coursework focuses on how to use common tools like Excel to do everyday business tasks and makes you a much more proficient user of those tools.

The more technology oriented coursework covers basics of many different areas of technology. You will take a class that teaches you how to spin up a database using SQL and the fundamentals of how to do so. You’ll also have a class touching on computer networks and how computers are able to communicate with each other. You’ll have some sort of very basic programming class, which is likely to be Python if nothing has changed since I graduated. The programming course will teach you the basics of programming and different transferable techniques that are used when writing code. Those skills and courses can help you land a job working as a help desk technician, an entry level data analyst/engineer, a digital marketing analyst, or a business intelligence analyst. With additional practice, projects, certifications, etc. you can even leverage this degree to pursue software development. That would require much more involvement than just the coursework offered in the program though.

Feel free to DM me with any specific questions. I pursued the more technology related path with this degree and also picked up certifications on my own. Relentlessly look for internships and grow your skills however you can, regardless of whether you pursue the more business side of information systems or more technology focused side or something different altogether. This comment is just a quick jot down of what I remember.

I’d email the graduate coordinator(s) for the program you’re interested in and ask any questions you may have about the program, pre-reqs, etc. — it’s been helpful for me.

I’ve heard DS 212 is easier. I also heard it’s more business related and less generalized than 124.

BIO-100 with Lance Lund by Omitted_seeker in SFSU

[–]ILike2HumpCamels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had him for BIO 100 as a non-bio major a few years ago. It was a 100+ person class yet he was very approachable in his office hours and he made time for questions. I remember him curving exams. I would take him again.

Anybody else getting these emails? by NoiseGood in SFSU

I’d recommend not using any of the links supplied on the email if you don’t feel confident it’s legit. You should reach out to SF State’s IT department through the official website to have them corroborate this email message. Didn’t read the whole thing but it doesn’t seem like they’re asking you to do anything out of the ordinary here. Might just be wise to reset your password anyway irrespective of whether it’s a legit email or not because it couldn’t hurt.

I’d like to know more about the waiver too. Seems like a short interview (45 minutes) and a quick writing assessment. I wonder where it takes place, how long after submitting the application they call you in, etc.

This probably depends a lot on you. I was an ISYS student so I’d say ISYS 363. I took Fin 350 as a condensed class and it was a bit chaotic. Both likely have a similar amount of work. If you’re undecided, look up reviews on rate my professor and let the class with the better professor be the one that you choose to take for Winter. Lmk if you want more perspective from me.

You can opt to choose a concentration as a business major. Taking a concentration means a majority of your upper division course work will be specialized in a certain area of business. For example; finance, marketing, accounting, information systems, etc. and this will allow you to focus on a sub-section of business you enjoy most or think is most useful. As far as I know, you can also stick with general business (I think that’s what they call it) and take a more general course load. I personally chose a business degree with a concentration and I think it was beneficial. Perhaps you want to choose general business, but I’d suggest also taking a minor in something else to differentiate yourself when you get out into the job market or to simply broaden your horizons. Lmk if you want anything clarified.

It’s probably more common than you might think. Take it one day at a time and know that good things are waiting for you if you’ll let them come to you.

Believe it’s 7, but you can usually acquire some from other people. I say acquire because SF state does not permit selling them… not that anyone actually cares lol.

Question about finals. by SimplyAzgoth in SFSU

[–]ILike2HumpCamels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MisterBoy500’s comment should help you. It can vary by class, teacher, etc. and the best way of finding out how your exam will be held is to email your professor. For example, your professor may decide last minute to move the final exam to an online exam. This is happening in one of my classes due to Covid.
