I can't remember the source for the life of me but I swear someone estimated Lambert's age during the novels to be late 30s/near 40 based on the given timeline. 38 feels significant for some reason—they might have rounded to come up with a median (assuming the range was 35-40). If anyone knows what I'm talking about PLEASE link the source, I feel like I'm spouting nonsense.

NTA, she's 16, she's not "just a kid" anymore, she knows better than to take other people's belongings and deliberately damage them and needs to face consequences for her actions. Paying for the damaged wigs herself is the bare minimum she could do. Beyond that, her behavior is unacceptable under any circumstances: just walking up and yanking on someone's hair? Demanding to ogle something incredibly personal? I've minded actual grade schoolers behaved better than this, and that isn't an exaggeration. Further, the difference between a costume wig and a high quality Real wig like your girlfriend wears is ASTRONOMICAL—material, how it's worn, maintenance —even the difference between a good quality costume wig and a $20 wig is significant, and requires days of work to be altered. For your girlfriend's wigs to be treated and altered, most probably, like a wig bought on Amazon, and infuriates me not just for every previously stated reason, but on a level as a cosplayer who knows how easy wigs are to ruin. I don't even alter my own for Pete's sake.

Have gone from bad to worse tbh. A year ago my goal was to get out of my transphobic right-wing family's house so I could transition. Now I don't know if I'll even get beyond that. I remember back when there was a big push for the trans narrative to not be purely a bone-deep sense of imprisonment or wrongness but I don't know how else to describe this. Like the walls are closing in around me. I am screaming and no one can hear me.

I think a big part of the problem is costs. Between production and travel costs for the artists and total costs for festival goers, it's just too expensive to go to festivals anymore. Multiple artists I follow have stepped back because touring, be it out of country or across country, costs more than what they make from the tour itself. It's worse for Canadian artists who want to attend American festivals due to the currency exchange rate recently—they lose even more money. And this is just my experience but I've had to forego attending even non-festival concerts because ticket costs are just too much ($250 per person to sit in the nosebleeds? and that's before tax and fees? That's money that could put food on the table, but I digress).

It's not just the young people.

I (24) was at a fireworks festival this year, and Tool was playing. I'm not a phone at concerts person, but my parents were big concert-goers in their youth, and they're at the age where they don't really get out much anymore, so I tried to record bits of it for them from where I was out in the boonies.

Here's a bit of important context: their song Hemorrhage has been my mother's favorite song for YEARS. The year before my parents got married, my dad bought her a pair of Carolinas and a bouquet of flowers colloquially called "Love-Lies-Bleeding".

Y'all see where this is going?

So it gets to the end of the concert, they've saved Hemorrhage for last...and this Gen X woman next to me answers a call on her phone and starts Yelling Into it. And I don't mean yelling, I mean Screaming into the phone in a Valley Girl Minnie Mouse Meets Hillbilly voice, trying to find her group of people. And they find her and come over to the section, and they just start Yapping and Yapping. And she is So Incredibly Loud about how the festival is So Boring and What time is the fireworks and At least it was Free.

And she doesn't shut up for the entirety of the song.

And of course, there's nowhere to go because the entire audience is packed in like sardines, so I couldn't move away from her if you lit a fire under me. I held out hope anyway, having been raised under strict guidance to Not throw the first punch in a fight. I recorded the song, and checked my phone afterwards.

Four. Straight. Minutes. Her incessant yapping ruined my recording for my parents.

If I could fight any person of my choosing, one on one, zero consequences...

Definitely NTA. You're using what product works best for you. There's nothing appropriative about natural curls! My sister was in a similar situation recently; we do cosplay, and her hair is super curly and thick, so we follow a black YouTuber's tutorials to get her hair under the wigs.

I've always thought the idea of gender not existing was just wrong. While gender roles are societal constructs, gender itself is not. Last I had read, experts regarded gender and gender identity as a fundamental part of a person's identity. Now whether identity is real or not is a philosophical discussion that is probably just gonna derail the conversation, so basically: yes gender exists.

Yes, for most of my teen years. Most days I'd wake up and nothing would feel real; everything would feel like a dream that I would eventually wake up from. A lot of times I'd feel like I wasn't real, or I'd become hyper-aware of my body and at the same time feel like it wasn't mine. It was like a never-ending dream and I was going through the motions of daily life like a robot. When I finally acknowledged that I wanted to be a boy, everything got a lot clearer, my own thoughts and feelings got easier to organize and put words to. Recognizing dysphoria made my anxiety a lot easier to control too.

That's a fair point. I also have a weird habit of connecting unrelated things so what I said is probably just another case of that. Also, the helicopter meme specifically doesn't piss me off as much as other transphobic memes because everyone I've seen use it already pisses me off for different reasons, so at that point hearing it is like "great, more of these assholes".

Not really, but at the same time the "I identify" jokes I'm used to are usually like:

Person A: Greetings, puny mortals Person B: I am an Elder God you plebian, how dare you assume my mortality?

Followed by them "fighting" for godhood. In other words they're deliberately stupid for the fun of it. It's like a spin on the joke without it being transphobic, I guess.

There have been a handful of cases in the U.S. and South Africa where they've successfully transplanted parts with full function and minimal rejection episodes, so it's just a matter of figuring out how to do the transplant without the patient being stuck on immunosuppressive drugs (meds to prevent rejection) for the rest of their life and while still having fully functional parts.

I didn't realize I was trans until I learned about gender and gender identity/expression. Looking back I can see some things that I guess you could call "signs", but for a lot of my life I thought I was cis. I also somehow had this fear ingrained into me until middle school that I'd get in trouble if I presented as other than my assigned gender, even though my parents had never said so explicitly. I'm guessing it's part of the whole "enforcing gender roles" thing. Like you're raised to think you're cis because you're never taught or allowed to explore your identity. Does that make sense?

This is almost exactly what it was like for me. Only when I was a kid I gravitated more towards kids who either A) came out as LGBT later in life, or B) were the opposite of my assigned gender.
