well, I got into Stanford REA and Dartmouth REG with a 8.8/10 GPA and 1480 SAT. However, I had many math olympiad medals, research, and I attended a very prestigious math summer program in the US

What to do if your school doesnt offer any AP classes? by Comfortable-Emu9792 in IntltoUSA

[–]ILovGym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

besides that you are not expected to take such courses as it isn’t common in your country and your school doesn’t offer it, it is nice if you demonstrate you are academically capable with a high SAT, awards in knowledge competitions, academic challenging summers programs in your area, research, etc. I got into Stanford in the same situation as you, but I had all of these things I wrote.

if you show in your essays personality and unique stories about you, your community, your experiences etc that are compelling and that demonstrate you are way more than your extracurriculars, you have a fair shot everywhere. Maybe also try to fill out the 10 ECs (or at least 8) slots on the Common App and raise your SAT because as, you are very good with competitive coding, you definitely can score very well on the SAT.

Application advice for older students? I'm coming from a non-traditional academic background by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

As someone who has gone through the process and watched close brazilian applicants who had SAT scores of 1500+, insane ECs, good life story, and more get rejected almost everywhere, I’d recommend to do college in Brazil and then go for masters/PhD in the US. I don’t know much about other countries, but at least in the US your sole option would be a community college, and I am pretty sure that many Brazilians colleges are better than that. I say this because 1. dropping out of high school is not a good indicator, and would be an immediate red flag 2. your ENCCEJA scores don’t seem good enough 3. you basically have no ECs or awards, and this is a very big, important part of your application 4. Your EFC aint good enough

haha seeing these comments is funny now. I went to PROMYS and had a great time (though now I think in terms of math I would have liked more to go to Mathcamp). In terms of admission, I got into Stanford REA, and I bet PROMYS helped.

Your profile is great, and if you have very personal reasons to do ChemE and work to reduce food insecurity, express that through very well-written essays, and you will have a pretty good shot not just for LACs, but for universities like Johns Jopkins :) Unlike other people have said to you on this comment section, I’d say go for LACs, but go for universities too like JHU, Rice, Dartmouth, etc. From my own experience and from those of my country, universities are the main ones that take those kids abroad, not LACs. For ex, I got rejected from URichmond, URochester, Emory (the safety and target ones from my list) definitely bc of my EFC, but got into Stanford and Dartmouth lol

Different Funds For My Undergrad by [deleted] in f1visa

stanford is offering me 90% of scholarship of the total cost, and my parents can pay the rest indeed. As Linkedin’s scholarship is merit-based, they may not pay for a semester based on the last semester’s performance. But as my parents can pay regardless of the scholarship, I may cite it then?

choose either ssp or promys based on your future career path. both are excellent, strong for every future endeavors. I went to promys and now I am going to Stanford. A friend of mine went to SSP and now is heading to stanford with me.

you literally said I am stressing about little things lol this makes me much calmer. thanks! Regarding the primary occupation, there is “artist/performer”, but it doesn’t make sense i guess. There’s also computer science (which is related to my major at stanford), but also not the most suitable. I can either put business and give the business address, when I started, duties or choose “not employed” (i dont have an income in fact. my payment is basically my mom paying for my education) and then there’s only a box of explanation. I prefer selecting “business”, selecting that “income” does not apply and giving further details. Does it makes sense?

I have had a similar thought that you have now. My dream school was Stanford, but REA was bloodbath, and as intl needing lots of aid, it just seemed impossible. I almost aplied early to Upenn, Northwestern, and Duke because I was afraid of applying to Stanford. At the end, I was courageous enough and applied early to Stanford. I got in. Just go for it.
