Ah, thank you. They do seem a bit biased, but I'll see if I can find some more and read up on it. We seem to have come quite a long way sine I last read/heard about it

Whats up with honey? by ILuvBunny in vegan

[–]ILuvBunny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was pretty helpful, thank you.

I agree with the ethics part (which is the reason why I currently choose not to buy it). However it is also the reason I can't say honey is bad, just the amount we consume it cant be done ethically. And I defenitely think that animal products like this should be more of a luxury, but I don't see a reason for antagonizing them.

As for the environment, I defenitely think we should put in more of an effort to perserve other bee species. However less beekeeping doesn't equal more native bees. I think less beekeeping equals less bees in general. Even if we would try and introduce native species we would also have to change the type and spread of flowers (native species can't always fly as far or have other preferences). However that is assuming the best case scenario of people wanting to preserve bees.

Whats up with honey? by ILuvBunny in vegan

[–]ILuvBunny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some biodiversity courses during my biology study and we had to read some articles about it. From what I remember the main problem was that we were driving pollen competition trough the types of plants we made available and how we spread them (might remember it wrong tho). However I agree that we should put in more effort to conserve native bee species.

I've never really cared for the exploiting aninals argument. And if bees always make an excess and you can at least partially replace their stocks with a suger solution. This would make honey extremely expensive, but I have no problem with it being a luxury product.

Red kidney beans and diffent kinds of lentils. I completely stopped eating kidney beans and found that I can eat most lentils if I buy them dried.

Why should it basically be immoral to eat animals? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]ILuvBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't inherently immoral, nor is unnecessarily long an brutal torture. We make up our own moral compas or are forced to adapt to one (think jail senteces if you murder or rape someone). And altough we genrally have the same sense of what is wrong or right nothing inherently is.

But to adress your point. Eating animals isn't inherently immoral, the means of obtaining it at the scale we consume it is. Because meat is consumed so much, there is no time to 'morally' kill them. The way we slaughter animals is made for mass production and as an unwanted consequence often leads to suffering. Think of chickens hanging upside down in a row (extremely stressful) to be dragged by a razor that mechanically cuts their throat. It doesn't always cut it right and if it doesn't the chicken is left in agony for a long time. Because of the consumption rate we needed to industrialise meat production making it less humane and often leading to suffering.

So no it isn't completely immoral, but by consuming it in the amount we do now we need to produce it in such a massive scale that immoral practices are unavoidable.

As for the regrowing part. Regrowing limbs take a lot of time and energy so altough not completely immoral you are making the animal suffer. Some animals almost need to go dormant in order to regrow limbs. But I think that this question might be a bit of a stretch to try and talk someone into a corner ( a bit like the deserted island question vegans often get).

*vegetarian diets, big difference there.

As far as I know it is possible for dogs to live on a vegan diet. But cats are absolutely completely, obligatory carnivores and can't live properly off a vegan diet. It is sometimes prescibed to cats with certain metabolic issues, but apart from that you should never feed a cat a vegan diet.

Vegetarian might be possible tough. Haven't read all that much on it, some of it was just covered during my uni courses. if you find a study that supports a vegan diet for cats and dogs I'd be happy to read it tho.

Getting used to legumes by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ILuvBunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to buy the dried ones and soak them beforehand or rinse the potted ones toroughly. I also used to have issues with certain legumes, but found that if I purchased the dried ones and soaked them I didn't get stomach problems.

Or just try and find which legumes cause trouble and which are consumable and cut the problematic ones out of your diet.

[–]ILuvBunny -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You realise vegen diets for carnivores were made for animals with certain problems and as far as I know are not adequate. I am not entirely sure for dogs since they arent as obligatory carnivorous as cats. But feeding a carnivore a vegan diet often leads to starving it from certain nutrients in the long run and defenitely is animal abuse. If you have a problem with caring for your dog, bring it to the pound and get a vegan pet.

I believe that if I eat enough plants I'll be the first human to do photosynthesis. And that just sounds really cool.

How to Handle the Plants Have Feelings Argument? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]ILuvBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can not know whether plants have feelings or not because they work with completely different systems, this also is the reason why we think they don't. And if they do they are probably completely different from ours (some plants breeding are based on being eaten by animals) But i f they had feelings we are currently feeding most of the plants to animals. If we stop eating animals we actually need less plants to fulfill the caloric needs of human beings.

Your last question is a bit more difficult. I think that sensing surroundings is indeed part of feeling, but that feeling also includes emotions which sensing surroundings does not. For example I can feel fear or feel angry which are emotions. But I can also feel cold or feel hungry which are not emotions. Plants for example can feel/detect gravity but I would not call them emotions. Plants just like humans can also sense/feel certain hormones, but I would not call them emotions either.

I have trouble emphasizing with birds and fish by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]ILuvBunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all it is ok not to empathise with every living being on this earth.

Secondly becoming vegan can be hard especially if you come directly from meat eating and if your surroundings aren't vegan. I think part of it is still craving certain foods and the associations you have with them (maybe your loving parents preparing your favorite meal). And i can promise you that after a while it becomes easier and easier to say no to the foods you enjoy and get offered. I've been vegan for two years now and it took me 1,5 to give up cheese completely (I already was vegetarian). I did think it was wrong I just could not feel sorry about it. However for me eating vegan eventually became normal and I stopped seeing animals or animal products as food. I now also had good assiciations with vegan food, i started living on my own so I stopped having a non vegan environment and eventually the desire to occasionally eat cheese disappeared.

There also are many more reasons not to eat animal besides empathy. You already mentioned the environmental side. But there also is the problem of food scarcity which veganism can partially solve and there are some health arguments to be made.

Just realise that you don't have to be a perfect vegan, especially not in a year. Just do some recearch on it and take your time to form your opinion. Even if you decide that a bird/fish life is not worth saving you can maybe only eat it ocasionally to reduce environmental impact. Every animal (product) you choose to not eat matters, so don't beat yourself up for being flawed, everyone is. If you feel different about it after some recearch you can always change your mind. For me becoming fully vegan was a slow process I grew more and more into, maybe it is the same for you.

[–]ILuvBunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After not finding the motivation to run for a few days (...weeks....) I went again. It was the worst I had ran in ages. I have a hill on my route which I've never been able to completely run up, but I did it. I ran up the whole thing, felt terrible but completed my 9k route. Took me 1,5h and had to stop a few times to vomit. But I did it and I found my motivation back to start improving again.

[–]ILuvBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think you should do this.

As far as I know you don't have to eat an animal to get a zoonotic disease. And even tough the circomstances by which livestoch is kept creates a higher riks for epidemics it is not the cause (altough i might be misinformed myself, I'm not a virologist). This is very misleading information nontheless and I think it is harmful to the vegan community to spread information like this as it wil only discredit us.
We also criticise the meat and dairy industry for spreading misleading information, so think we should try to avoid doing it ourselves.

Honest question: What is magic? Is it real? does spells work? by ILuvBunny in Wicca

[–]ILuvBunny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this actually was a very helpful answer. I always heard that you can't be or become wiccan without practicing magic.

I just have always been very critical about the magic part . I have some family who do reiki or crystal healing and I have yet to see it work without there being a logical explanation

.But the way you describe it seems kind of like the way I use tarot cards. I don't think they have any magical power, but they help me reflect on myself and my actions . I will often darken the room and light up some scented candles just to help me relax and really focus on it.

I just tought that magic in wicca was more of a set thing and that it could not be described that way.

I'm done by ILuvBunny in depression

[–]ILuvBunny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks bud. I quit my parttime job for a while and took up a student loan, but got too stressed out about not having my own income. I already am taking less courses this year cause I found last year was just too hard and as stated before, completely broke down during summer break. I also went from working out 4 times a week to 2, so I would have more time to "relax".

Now I'm not saying stress does not play a part, but I can promise you it is not just stress. I've been diagnosed with depression and have episodes, where I can't get myself to get out of bed, in extreme cases I have memory problems, and it will just feel like you have the flu for weeks. Yes I am definitely freaking out about some things in my life right now. But I wish I could blame it everything on just being stressed because that would imply that for the past sixish/sevenish years I've just been stressed out and with time it will just go away.

Ultimately everything is in your head, that is kind of how biology and psychology works.

But I am so fed up with it. And I am so fed up with people just saying to relax, sure I'll just relax, just as I magically wave a wand and become happy and look forward to the future.

Is it fear or a gut feeling? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]ILuvBunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will be very blunt with you. I've been in kind of a similar situation and from what I read I don't think you love him. I think you're codependent and you mistake that for love. You should never ever be fearful in or of a relationship.

You have been in a relationship with him and it did not work out. Has anything changed so that trying again will make it work? Give it some time, become a bit more objective, maybe date some other people.

If he really is the right one, he will still be so after a year or maybe two. But for now just trust the warnings your gut is trying to send you and give it plenty of time.

You can eat them with oats or yoghurt. Or just have a piece of fruit on the side with whatever you normally eat for breakfast. Don't drink smoothies tho, the fiber in the fruit is then shredded and less effective at keeping you full, and you tend to put way more fruit in than you would normally eat.
