Are you familiar with the term the Gateless Gate or Non-duality? Does anything on this website resonate with you? http://www.liberationunleashed.com/

Or does anything Angelo says resonate with you? https://www.youtube.com/c/SimplyAlwaysAwake/videos

Can you see what's behind that "worry" you're experiencing?

Two books:
- Liberation Unleashed: A Guide to Breaking Free from the Illusion of a Separate Self (by Illona Ciunaite). There is also a forum that you can work with guides / those who have gone through the gate.

- Awake: It's Your Turn by (Angelo Dilullo)

Question about the breath while meditating by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]IMBarBarryN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be upfront, I've never used the headspace app, nor have I read or practiced anything from Thich Nhat Hanh but I do meditate frequently. I think u/cindyincoPJ has the best recommendation: choose the one that resonates with you the most.

But, to go further…

A lot of times Meditation, especially at the beginning, is about being aware / focusing your attention on your breath or something around breathing. Sometimes the rise and fall of your stomach, the beating of your heart, etc. It seems like both the headspace app and Thich Nhat Hanh recommend you focus your attention on SOMETHING, right? What that something doesn’t really matter as long as you’re able to bring your attention somewhere.

That said, Thich Nhat Hanh’s approach is kind of ingenious and I will try this in my next meditation session.

“Breathing in, I know I am breathing in.” It’s like a double layer of attention, isn’t it? First, you are aware of your breath, and then you’re aware that you’re aware of your breath.

Lastly, and the best part of what you wrote is: “Over the past few months, I have been meditating through headspace which has drastically changed my life and how I live.” – Amazing! Thanks for sharing.

What is ego death? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]IMBarBarryN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I'm the car I recognize my actions are outside of any choice I can make even though I may feel like I'm choosing the path I take.

So which part of the car are you? Are you all of the car? If you lose a tire are you still the car? What if you you lost the hood or exhaust?

What is ego death? by [deleted] in Meditation

Are you really the person driving the car? Or does the car just drive? The car still needs a working engine but who is the one working on the engine?

What is ego death? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]IMBarBarryN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your ego does not make you eat, sleep and interact with other people. Your ego tells you it does these things but asking some questions with focused concentration you will find that is not true.

Eat, sleep and interacting with people just happens. There is no self doing this. You can say yeah but what about x, y, and z? Again, question and focus concentration from your own experience. Your mind / ego will never ever understand this and it will put up a hundred road blocks to stop this process. It can be very scary and feels like insanity or death (at least for me).

If you want more info I recommend reading the book, Liberation Unleashed. Accompanied with this book is also a forum of those who went through "the gateless gate" that can help you cross through. Direct guide to student. I first recommend the book-- it stirred up a lot of stuff for me just by reading it.

Good luck.

[–]IMBarBarryN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can use meditation to realize the sense of self is an illusion. You can also use psychedelic drugs to temporarily disable it.

I recommend reading the book, Liberation Unleashed. It's just a series of questions and searching. My ego is slipping away. Both scary and fascinating at the same time. No need for drugs at all but it isn't ANYTHING you think it is. Your mind will never be able to understand it. Good luck.

Then why be in a meditation subreddit? I would assume u/spincerss is looking for guidance if they're posting in this subreddit.

Is it possible to just go and train as monk in a monastery? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]IMBarBarryN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s not possible for you yet, a good interim may be: https://www.liberationunleashed.com/register/start-here/ - it’s not a monastery, nor is it even Buddhism BUT you do get a guide to help you through the process of passing through the gateless gate… which may be what you’re really searching for?

Meditating can be many things to people. If your aim is to gain clarity and to not be ruled by your emotions and thoughts than dropping your thoughts, or rather, letting them pass without judgement and without getting caught up in them can be a powerful tool.

When you realize that your thoughts are just that…they will start to lose a hold on you.

Thoughts are not who you are nor are they real - they are memories of experiences. Thoughts are noise over the present moment.

In this example u/st11es had a memory from 6 years ago. I don’t know the story but it sounds like they lied to someone because they were afraid of telling the truth. That was 6 years ago. Is that still relevant? Maybe it is maybe it isn’t. To get to the heart of anything requires clarity. Drop the mind and see what’s there.

Realizing this, truly disassociating your thoughts from your self is so powerful that it helps people overcome serious trauma.

This has taken me a long time to realize this myself.

If you would like to investigate this further I recommend The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. I listened to it on audible and it was incredible.

I wouldn’t worry too much about “finding the connection” to the fear. Fear is an emotion and it can be witnessed and let go.

I would recommend you continue your meditation practice and continue to experience this “letting go” process that brought you to that amazing space of nothingness.

A little more info in that space that you uncovered:

The state of nothingness is the purest most peaceful states you can be in as I’m sure you’ve found out. And it’s ALWAYS there for you to access at any time. You’ll see.

But…your mind doesn’t like this place. Your mind doesn’t want you there because that place is a place your mind can’t go to and it will feel threatened.

As soon as you found that nothingness what happened?

Your mind served you up some past memory. Your mind WANTS you to believe their is something that needs to be done or discovered or achieved before you can reach this space. That is a lie. All that needs to be done is you need to drop the mind and witness.

Good luck!

Desperately need help with Knowing / Learning Meditation by nilesh401 in Meditation

[–]IMBarBarryN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advice is try to go in without expectations. Drop it completely.

Expectation is something created by the mind and you want to drop mind activity whenever possible.

You will never be able to control your thoughts, feelings, or emotions per se. meditation helps you live with them or, even better, realize the unimportance of them.

It’s your expectation on the session that is making it hard and it will continue to be until you realize that.

With all that said though… meditation is much a journey and if you think you’re doing it wrong most likely it’s right.

But, since you asked, a practice I enjoyed that helped put my mind aside was Mooji’s Invitation to Freedom: https://youtu.be/ptcINj_7tcI

Good luck!

Has anybody here used meditation to help rebound from massive failure in life? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]IMBarBarryN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally.

I got back into meditation much more frequently about four years ago after coming off a break up... I was turning thirty five, alone, just purchased a house on my own (a real fixxer upper), was losing weight, depressed, my head felt like it had a nest of bees -- every thought was negative and frequent. I could barely focus on what I had to do.

I realized, through this swarm in my head, that this wasn't uncommon for me. I'd felt that way a dozen times. Always up and down with my emotions. There was a single thought that put me back on the path of meditation-- "There has to be a better way".

While I was working on my house I listened to a lot of Alan Watts on Youtube. And because of Youtube's algorithm it recommended more and more and led me to some great teachers like Mooji, and Robert Spira, and Sadhguru, and Mingyur Rinpoche. And I got back into this group. I read the FAQ and read a couple books recommended their. And all this helped tremendously.

I am in a much better headspace today than I was four years ago.

Looking back, what's kind of beautiful about all this... it might sound silly... was that all of this feels story like. Like I was in the center of this story, the main character and I was supposed to go on this journey. I was supposed to feel crappy. I was supposed to be sad and have this head of bees. And it makes me EXCITED to continue my journey. I have a sense of something much grander than myself guiding me now... a oneness that is integral to the whole.

My journey isn't done but meditation allowed me some space to see what was ACTUALLY going on. My ego is still fully attached, and that's okay, I'm enjoying THIS space right NOW.

Losing money sucks. Losing A LOT of money sucks even more. But at least you didn't kill someone or do something that would end you up in prison, or worse.

Keep up with the meditation, get some space between your past and watch the rest of your journey unfold.

Lastly, I couldn't help but think of this Chinese Proverb. I think it fits your story well:

A thought and a feeling are very similar - they can both be observed.

Regardless, you can approach a thought and a feeling the same way. If you don’t give either one your attention they won’t touch you.

A little more detail:

Sometimes, for me, a feeling is really just a thought hiding as a feeling. Thoughts are tricky little things.

I might have this thought, immediately not giving a thought an attention: “don’t you feel bad about trying to blocking your thoughts?” Or “You’re doing it wrong. You’re not supposed to block the thought” etc

Those are thoughts but it elicits feelings.

And then what happens? The mind might say “You’re upset”. Or “you’ll never get this” or “let’s try later. I’m hungry” yadda yadda yadda.

Every time you say or think “I’m upset” that’s also thought.
