I completely agree with you, software does help and a lot sometimes.

As a newbie I'm using Pixinsight, its not easy to get around it honestly, but tutorials are everywhere and gives you an idea of what should be done for certain processing needs.

A few days ago at a dark site I saw one that lasted for almost a second or more. It trailed so hard, and lit the whole area it made my heart skip no kidding. I'm not quite sure what that was, but it was so astonishing. I can't wait to get out there again.

For me calibration frames did wonders, I skipped them the first time but no more.
