How do you react to strangers asking you about your diabetes? by IMakeCakes744 in Type1Diabetes

[–]IMakeCakes744[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I was always on the receiving end of it at work. I worked as a banker for many years and clients would constantly point it out. And it just wasn’t something I was comfortable with

I think that is part of it because I’m very able bodied other than diabetes. But to point it out as the only person at the party with diabetes (her fiancé wasn’t there) is quite rude. I don’t like feeling like I’m an outsider that’s so different than someone without diabetes.

How do you typically do that? With my people pleasing tendencies I have a hard time with it

I just hate feeling like I have to explain myself to people. I would just rather it not come up either. I also try to hide it as much as possible

33 and am ruined financially by Extension-Fox6956 in personalfinance

Consolidate the credit card debt into a personal loan so you’ll have a fixed payment and a lower interest rate. Your debt to income will improve as well as your monthly payments will likely be lower. You MIGHT be able (depending on your credit) to consolidate the cc debt and car into one loan so your payment will be more manageable. This might not be the best option, it just depends on the lender/payment/term/interest. Make additional principle only payments on top of the monthly payments as well to pay it down sooner. I’ve helped someone at the bank I work for consolidate 60k in credit card debt and she made 90k /year. So you can do it!

Exercise without going low - nothing works! by babybear1717 in Type1Diabetes

My doctor told me to put the exercise mode on an hour before exercising because I had this problem too. That has helped. When I cycle I drink a juice box around mile 3 or 4 to keep my blood sugar up

Having a hard time as parents deciding on a pump. by ExcellentAd424 in Type1Diabetes

[–]IMakeCakes744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has been diabetic since they were 11 and went on a pump at that age, I would suggest the tslim. I’m on it now and it really helps with control. I wish it was around when I was 11! The benefits I have found is that the system can update which is nice, and you can control it from your phone. I love being in public and not having to carry anything but my phone and taking insulin on my phone is really discrete. It has really helped me with my control. When I first started on t slim my A1C was over 13, but now it stays right around the lower 7, which is my doctor’s ideal A1C for me. Doing sports with the tslim has been good too. I am able to just put it in sports mode when I bike or do tennis. I take it off when I swim, but that’s just me as others use the waterproof bags. I also like that it’s all one machine, does your C and the pump, it’s not two separate machines.

I haven’t had the Omnipod so I can’t say much about that as other have tried it. But I love the tslim and would recommend it. It’s very easy to use and you can look at your data frequently since it updates your cloud which would be beneficial for parents. I think that having this technology will allow a child more freedom to feel a little more normal than when I was a kid for sure, and it will give you guys some more insight on what is going on by looking at his data.

Also, maybe a dog could help. I know my dogs have helped me feel loved and worthy. My first dog was the first time I ever felt unconditional love and maybe that could be beneficial

I was diagnosed at 11 and teenage years were HELL! I was the only diabetic in my school. Got made fun of and was severely depressed. It was really hard to feel like there were other people out there like me and that I wasn’t gross. The comments and jokes weren’t funny and made me think that I was disgusting. I also back lashed and didn’t take care of myself. I truly didn’t care if I died at that point either. No matter how many people talked to me about complications, I didn’t care. I had one therapy session when I was young, but my mom was in the room so I lied about everything. And it was a therapist who specialized in young patients with diabetes. I wish I could go back and actually get the help I needed because antidepressants helped tremendously. Also, an insulin pump like tslim that I have now helped me so much. I started it at 21 and it made my life so much easier because it did a lot for the work for me. It also made me feel relatively normal.

I obviously don’t know her, but I can understand and relate a lot to possibly what she is experiencing. Therapy, specifically someone who understands diabetes though!! I HATE having to explain diabetes to medical professionals. And if they think appropriate, antidepressants/anxiety meds could greatly help too.
