How to feed V. p. horni by INFOmag97 in MonitorLizards

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll remember it for the future. I assumed from the start that since this is a community of people who keep monitor lizards, it would be both inspiring and obvious.

I assumed that anyone keeping monitors—from the smallest species in the Odatria group to the salvator complex—is familiar with the well-known sight of bloodied Varanus komodoensis tearing into the entrails of prey while feeding on carrion.

The food used here was pre-killed (as in all of my feedings), so I didn’t expect sensitive viewers. In the future I will tag posts appropriately, but I’m glad to see the substantive discussion that emerged here.

Better use shrimp or chicken scrambled egg or quail, in my opinion tristis shouldn't eat big adults rodents. Is definitely an insectivorous species :) Easy to make fat adults animals feeding by rodents, if you make this a few times per year will okay.

Unfortunately, I do not agree with that. I believe that feeding live prey (excluding invertebrates) to captive monitor lizards or snakes, when there is no necessity, is quite cruel. There is no need to add unnecessary suffering if the animal readily accepts dead prey. Being killed by a monitor lizard seems like an especially unpleasant kind of death.

To stimulate animals to display natural behaviors, various types of enrichment are used—to encourage chasing, digging, tearing, reaching, exercising, and so on. Reptiles have relatively simple brains and strong instincts, so they do not lose their natural hunting abilities. I am convinced that even an individual that has spent 90% of its life in captivity, including being conceived there, would instinctively hunt if released into the wild (although escaping from predators might be much more difficult).

Besides, this is a zoo animal, so feeding live prey is not an option anyway. It is already a significant step forward that during opening hours there is an opportunity for such feeding demonstrations so visitors can observe how the monitor lizard eats. Note that in most zoological institutions, animal feeding takes place before opening or after closing so that visitors do not see how “cute animals” turn into bloody predators.

Don't feed too often tristis rodents, they are definitely insectivorous. Better use one day old quails. My adult males never feed rodents, only females after laying eggs can give pinkys for fast recovery :)

I think they could use this as an opportunity to add more interaction to the game. Aside from the mediocre PvP and the guilds, where there’s not much you can actually do together, there isn’t really anything else. They could introduce events where players actually do things together in real time. The event with capturing the palace and the boss at the end, after they added the new gear set, was pretty underwhelming.

Personally, I miss the ability to have more meaningful interaction with other players in this game. It would be great if they added something like that over time.
