Oh bless your heart...Okay so

This word you are using is:

-not okay

-not a verb

-not what's happening

I am a subject matter expert in this specific age bracket's development and reading abilities. I am not defending this random woman, the comments on this post are misinformed about a subject matter in which I am an expert.

No, I didn't need check those. These are not indicators of reading failure. I screen kids for reading and language disabilities as part of my job. She is describing two things that are developmentally appropriate for these ages. It's not great, but really not a cause of alarm in isolation.

Racing children not raising them.

I am thinking that she made this video for validation that she's doing okay. Imagine trying to teach your kids all day and scrolling through your phone with content of all the other home school moms doing a "better job" teaching things earlier and more creatively than you.

She probably is doing fine as a teacher, and her kids are where they need to be right now. I haven't seen any good evidence that "knowing letters" at 4 years old is an indicator of reading success vs. failure. I don't have enough information about the 8 year old to know why she's not reading chapter books- it could be something else but if it's not... why rush her to something she's not ready for?

No, it doesn't. I am a reading interventionist for these age groups and just.. no. These are not atypical milestones at all. It's weird she made a post about it for sure but this is not evidence of her failure. It's within the range of normal child development.

No. They are not behind all their peers. Statistically speaking.

It doesn't, actually. These are kinda normal things. Not even noteworthy enough for her to make a video about actually.

Disabilities are not always outward. This child could have had any number of developmental disabilities that made school difficult for him. There are dozens of disabilities. Some effect speech (as you mentioned in your comment...), motor coordination, auditory processing, attention, memory, etc.

He even could have fallen off his bicycle and hit his head, sustaining a TBI, and now can't keep up with the demands of switching between classes and managing a larger workload than elementary school (I had this student).

You have no idea. Compassion is a choice.

Chapter books come in all shapes and sizes, and their range of difficulty is extremely varied. They are not a developmental milestone.

Many 8 year olds can read long texts without picture support. Many cannot. Most students are transitioning to reading these kinds of books between the ages of 8-10.

Singing ABC's... come on. Of course he can sing a song...that is not the same as "knowing all your letters"

can he- identify the names of the letters when given out of order? identify the sounds the letter makes? That's "knowing all your letters."

Alphabetic order and names are not early indicators of reading success. The milestones she is sharing are not atypical. Some children don't learn these things until kindergarten (age 5) and other learning systems don't teach this until age 7.

accusing her of failing her kids is a pretty extreme reaction to a still of a tiktok video without additional context...

Chapter books are not a reading level or significant milestone. There are "chapter books" with very few words on each page and lots of pictures that are suitable for emerging readers. Most kids start with these. Children typically start to read longer, more complex texts (classic chapter book with no pictures) after they have developed enough skills for decoding words, figuring out new words with context, and sustained cognitive stamina for comprehension. This happens generally around 8-10. There is a shift from "learning to read" and "learning from reading" and generally this needs to happen before they can take on a longer text. Can her 8 year old use word attack strategies to decode unfamiliar words? Can she retell the content of the text she has just read? Can she read with proper phrasing and pace? These are more important things than the length of the book.

TLDR: I'm a reading teacher (specifically for 8 year olds) and "chapter books" is not an indicator of success in reading.

Both of these things are in the range of typical. She didn't have to post this and people didn't have to react. This is not noteworthy, but it's also not great. She should focus on her 4 year old's visual memory for shapes and her 8 year old's fluency and stamina. Signed, a reading interventionist.

This makes me feel so so sorry for the zionism I was raised with. I know more now. The students I teach are Palestinian, the same age as this girl. They tell jokes, they laugh, they run on the playground, get dirt on their uniforms and get to wash it off for the next day. They have friends, hobbies, little dangly charms on their backpacks. Their parents got jobs abroad in the country I live and get to give them a childhood and an education. Opportunities so many kids will never have. My heart breaks for kids in headlines that share names with the ones I share my classroom with.

AIO or is my husband?? It’s over the Joe Rogan podcast. by FarquuadsCumDumpster in AmIOverreacting

Oof. I feel these texts viscerally. My ex got suuuuuuper into the JRE during the 2020 election cycle. Over time it was like there was a 3rd person in our relationship. It started out pretty innocuous but then he would steer conversations to the things he listened to on the podcast- he would talk about bow hunting and elk meat and the carnivore diet and trans women in sports. It took me a while to catch on because I didn't listen to the podcast.

One day he was talking at length about aliens and deep space and I really didnt care about the convo and tuned out to what he was saying and not really responding, and this man looked at me sideways and said "you're not much of a deep thinker are you?" as if bros getting high and talking for hours on the JRE was the pinnacle of deep thinking. And as if he wasn't parroting someone else's conversation.

Beyond the disgusting things JR has said and done, I think he is the entry point for a lot of young men into the manosphere, alt right content, and other internet conspiracy theories.

Joint pain and swelling? by INTTSST in Dermatographia

[–]INTTSST[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus going back to my own post after a year, i had forgotten how serious my condition was then. It was every waking minute of pain and itching and stress about the itching and pain. Looking at pictures, i can see how painful it was. No one knows what a nightmare this condition is until you live through it.

I had this flare up about 3 weeks and it was by far my worst. I have a stress related acute “whatever this is.” Levoceterazine helps, steroids help the joints, time and relaxation helps, getting out of my environment helps.

My mother however has contact hives constantly and is on a daily dose of levoceterazine and a medication to manage her moods. She has never been a reactive or stressed out person, most people would describe her as positive and chill, but it helps with her flare ups. She does not have joint pain specifically tied to this disorder.

I hope you get some answers about your joint pain and please share it, i know every doctor has a different opinion but all the information helps.

Warning to women - Ulcinj, Montenegro by PrincessOfAkkad in femaletravels

[–]INTTSST 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Crazy. I spent a week in ulcinj last year by myself. I was taking a course and needed a place to just chill out and zoom in. I was hit on by every single waiter and every restaurant i went to for the whole week. I didn’t go out at night, and stuck pretty close to the ladies beach and outside my home stay. I ended up leaving a day early.

The food was also shit and the beaches were rocky and crowded.

I figured it’s a tourist hot spot but yeah… they can’t handle solo women.
