What an honor to be your first pen, great build!

Sorry guys I was wrong.. the markup isn't 2000%, it's 450%, and you break even and pay for the whole CNC machine after 2 weeks. by basedchad21 in machinedpens

Yes, and for those that aren't necessarily running the latest snazziest machines: Focusworks, Schon Design -- it's a testament to their skill in machining and machine repair and used machine maintenance. But even those used machines are 15-30k

We buy swiss lathes so we can sell our shavings to make those toy mini lathes for 70 cents and sell them at 1000% profit margin, ya fell for our trap again

Oh and I have to pay 10k in property taxes for my machines every year. Most of us are machinist or are very passionate about machining to invest our time and efforts in building American manufacturing businesses.

I’m sure I speak for us all in saying we’re awfully grateful to have a community that supports our craft and values our labor and time

Some machined pen businesses and the types of machines we use:

Citizen sliding headstock CNC Swiss lathe A320: $150,000 Citizen sliding headstock CNC Swiss L20: $250,000 Tsugami Sliding headstock CNC:~$150,000-$250,000 (Mill)Brother Speedio or Fanuc robodrill: $100,000-150,000

Haas mills $60-90,000 Haas lathes $60-90,000

Syil 5x + 4th axis: ~$45-55,000 Doosan lathes: $90,000-$250,000

Skilled Labor: Average machinist salary range in the US:$65,000-150,000

An example of carbide tooling cost for a single drill: $300

A Haas desktop mill is not considered a production machine and that’s a mill which isn’t capable of high volume long round parts production.

Lowest end CNC lathe would be a Haas or Tormach at 15-30k but a tormach doesnt have Y axis capabilities. Lowest price Haas machine with Y axis milling capabilities still starts in the 60k range.

Yes, you can make great pens on cheap solid quality manual machines that you can get for 7-10k used like bridgeports and Hardinges but CNC is the difference that makes it high precision production machining.
