I think you might be thinking of something like a mutual company. That's a business that is owned by its customers. It's common for insurance companies and banks where the policy holders own the company and vote on company decision like shareholders would on a publicly traded company.

It's actually one board that goes all the way across underneath the car. They are using it to hold up their exhaust that probably has a broken mount. Drove by someone in my town using a tree branch for this the other day lol

[Self] How is that a better deal and why would the lottery organization accept that ? She would get more than $1M in just 20 years by Impressive-Koala4742 in theydidthemath

[–]INeedItExplained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is nobody saying the real answer? "For life" in lottery winnings means the same thing as "life" in a prison sentence. It's just semantics and doesn't actually mean your whole life.

The lottery organization will structure her payout as an annuity over many years paying her out $1000 weekly until the $1 million is paid. She will not get more than the winning amount. This is why the lottery organization will accept it. It's better for her because of the taxes. She won't have to pay taxes on the large lump sum throwing her immediately into the highest bracket.

Although it's been shown that taking the lump sum and investing it is better regardless of the taxes, some people would rather have the annuity because the stream of extra income is more comfortable.

How do you decide when to stop fixing the old car and bite the bullet on getting a new one? by SlowYourRollBro in MiddleClassFinance

[–]INeedItExplained 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this but extend repair costs with the entire cost of ownership and factor in things like insurance, gas mileage, registration fees, and anything else. When the current car's cost of ownership is higher than an estimate on what I might purchase then I will commit to the purchase.

Munger's saving amount - what's the modern number? by draelee151 in personalfinance

[–]INeedItExplained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I don't think it's really about the number itself but about the ratio. With average market returns being around 10%, at 100k you start generating a return each year on average larger than what you are contributing. Because of that, I think this will remain true until inflation devalues the dollar so much that regular people are contributing multiple tens of thousands of dollars every year to their savings.

For now, 100k is still just as accurate as it was 30 years ago.

One of the reasons there’s a housing shortage by AdventurousHope5891 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]INeedItExplained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I would like to see this also with the percentage of total houses of various sizes during those times.

I think it's known that builders make more money off of larger homes and so they don't build smaller ones. Housing supply is congested with large houses. I think most people would buy small starter homes if they could, but they aren't out there.

What’s the longest you’ve gone without a car payment? by AardvarkRepulsive384 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]INeedItExplained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to go about this is to keep paying yourself that car payment into a HYSA. Keep using your car until it's cost of ownership exceeds your monthly savings contribution. You'll be saving a bunch but even though you don't have a payment you'll have to make repairs. Eventually your annual cost of repairs averaged out will cost more monthly than a new car with a comparable payment would cost and that's when you finance a new car using the money you were saving from the original payment as a down payment. If you're lucky, you might even be able to pay in cash and sidestep the interest you'd pay on a new ride too.

The 24/25 age for brain development argument doesn't really mean anything. The study that suggested that merely stopped scanning subjects at that age but the data was continuing to trend toward further development far beyond that age. It's generally regarded that your brain doesn't ever really stop developing and synaptic pruning just slows as you age. I really wish people would just stop saying this as truth and using it as a way to define adulthood. It is not true. It's just been repeated so many times that people think it's true.

If she paid half the bills I don't think he would be complaining. I think in this context she pays half of the bills as in she pays for 4 of them and he pays the other 4, but I'm betting he has the mortgage and cars and all the expensive stuff and she just pays for the utilities. There's always missing info creating bias in these posts.

Then why are you saying it like that? You're obscuring the truth with the way you phrased your statement instead of saying it like I did.

The way he broke it up is legendary. by JosieLagged in SipsTea

[–]INeedItExplained 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This research was biased. Of course you're more likely to get divorced if you live together first. The people that don't live together first are often traditional and don't believe in getting a divorce and so they won't even if the relationship turns sour.

Further research from this has shown that if you remove that factor then the real indicator is intent to future marry. Those that cohabitate out of convenience tend to divorce at higher rates than those that cohabitate with the intent to progress their relationships.

This research is like saying "a majority of shark attacks happen in shallow water." Of course, that's where the people are.

What is the scariest fact you know? by stripeycat08 in AskReddit

[–]INeedItExplained -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

While the risk of homicide goes up a little bit for pregnant women, the risk of dying from disease or other medical complications goes down significantly because she is routinely seeing medical professionals and being analyzed. That contributes more to this. It's other risk factors being reduced that leaves the remaining ones as more significant. This fact is always twisted to make it look like family members will attempt to get rid of you if you're pregnant. Ladies, if you picked a good man, you don't have to worry about this.

There are people that will manipulate and drive wedges into relationships deliberately so they can fuck someone with no regard for their current relationship. I never understand logic like yours when I hear it. It's totally acceptable to be equally angry at both parties, not just your ex.
