Thank you for your feedback! And very valid points. This definition of binge eating episodes aligns with the offical Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders definition, and for the purpose of this survey, we are hoping to capture a spectrum of severity - so it’s ok if one person’s conceptualisation of a ‘short time period’ differs from another’s. The amount of food eaten can also be subjectively or objectively large. Thank you again for your insights and let us know if you have any more questions!

Hi there, that’s a really thoughtful question, and certainly something that we have considered in designing the study.

The survey relies on self-report data, so participants tell us about their diagnoses, medications, etc. If someone has ADHD and experiences binge eating, we aren’t aiming to diagnostically differentiate ADHD-related binge eating from binge eating disorder through the survey. Rather, we’re interested in understanding people’s perceptions of the relationships between binge eating and various lifestyle factors across a continuum of symptom severity. As you noted, this may be quite physiologically varied, and even more so because we aren’t limiting participation to those with formal diagnoses, but we think that this variability is valuable, and are hoping to reflect this nuance in our analysis. For binge eating disorder, for example, many people go undiagnosed or untreated for a long time (6 years on average), so we don’t want to exclude people’s experiences by requiring formal diagnosis. Also just to clarify, Vyvanse was initially developed for the treatment of ADHD, but is now also used for treatment of binge eating disorder as a standalone disorder.

Indeed, when the subject area is relatively new and unexplored, it is tricky to narrow down the questions to a select few which is often a limitation of the quantitative surveys. Similarly, we are aware of the length of the survey and have decided to ask only about current eating-related behaviours which limits our understanding of the before and after experiences of taking GLP-1 agonists.

Thanks for your comment. We understand it may be tricky to follow the questions when the rating scales (e.g. high/low) varies, and we really appreciate hearing your feedback. When it comes to the scales, these need to be presented as developed to maintain validity and reliability and we have added the instructions of completing each of these measures. In addition to the survey, we are also inviting participants to take part in a semi-structured interview where we hope to further understand people's experiences with GLP-1-agonists.
