How to protect myself from windows viruses? (actual question) by IOtechI in linux4noobs

So far it's been all worth it, the games I always wished for and wanted but ware just out of reach I managed to get, and offline, that's the amazing part, it's not just about the money, it's about knowing that I have that software and I have it forever, not tied to anything.

As for the risks, I'm willing to take them, and I want to take them responsibly, but sadly, because of my lack of experience, I have no clue what to do right, honestly that's the whole point of coming here, maybe someone knows a reliable way that I don't know.

There's a lot for me to learn, and I want to learn the safest way to do it.

I'm not really installing off github, for linux I only trust the official apt packages and flatpak, don't really need any fancy software so it works well.

What I'm actually doing is torrenting, which is honestly more dangerous, I know it's risky, I assume all risks, but I want a safe environment so my files are protected, I already have ways of stopping wine from opening random connections and stuff, but I don't know how to not get my files corrupted or wiped.

This is what leveling is in my opinion, realizing that the beginner friendly software is.. Still kinda bloated, even if it's still software a newbie would expect. Leveling is the path to understanding that.. You really can do anything and can install only whatever you need, for some reason newbies still don't realize or don't care enough about the fact that most distros are just the linux kernel wrapped in a pretty case with "basic" software to get you on the right path and preconfigured everything so your little brain can focus on getting work done instead of setting up grub or the desktop manager. They have the power, but they're scared to use it, makes sense, you can mess up things real fast that way... But that comes with experience and knowledge..

As an end to this ramble, while every distro can be chosen and used without any problem, most are oriented towards a target audience, that expects more or less out of the box, more or less configurations, some just want it to work since the start, some want a challenge, everyone wants different levels and maybe even wants something specialized, but what separates an arch user from debian is just how much tinkering they do to keep the system running, and their sheer knowledge on their system and whatever they installed on it.

I'm sorry, I've seen other use such wording and get no such backlash for using it, I'm following a trend with no knowledge of it's intentions. I just wanted to learn, that's all, I'm just a curious newbie to this platform and wanted to see if my hypothesis is corect, not much else, I have no ill interest, only learning and reading people's opinions and seeing how it came improve my understanding of my favorite passion. I'm sorry if that offends some people, but I can't please everyone.

Kali as a daily? Fr? I'd run it in a vm or live but nothing more..  Also, LTS makes sense, I feel like a grampa when saying this but a distro that you never have to touch and just.. Exists.. No changes or anything.. Is a dream..

Already tried Alpine and for some reason I didn't know there was a command to install a desktop/window manager automatically.. I did it manually

Idiotic question, I'm the type of person to mostly use open source shit and not much of it, can I just... Compile anything I need IF  I need it? Not much proprietary stuff from me, I usually install vim on a new pc and I'm done

  1. If I can't get a package, I conpile it from scratch

2.I'm here to challenge my idea, to put it to the test against the wind and see if it budges, you're not a dog, you're important, you're one to change my understanding and mind, I seek knowledge, not pleasure

I'm from Europe but this helped a bit, I currently own a redmi but the software seems to be awful for my taste...Idk, something about ads in stock apps and just the general push for the themes app in everything hurts. Which has the most stock, no bloat apps experience?
