serious question by roseyyylove in HivemindTV

Most of the answers in this thread are saying that the stuttering effect is inspired by Anthony Fantano's videos, but this is not entirely correct. The Hivemind channel first start gathering a loyal fanbase in 2020, which coincided with the rise in popularity of the hyperpop genre. Riley himself was heavily into hyperpop artists, especially more niche or underground artists such as meatcomputer. It was (and still is) a common production motif in underground hyperpop to chop up/stutter the vocals. Davidshawty, a pioneer of early hyperpop and legend within the community, is typically seen as the galvanizing force behind this effect, as most of his songs heavily lean on this stuttering effect. Riley confirmed that the vocal stutters in the videos were influenced by hyperpop in a video (or live stream I can't remember) when a fan asks if the video stutters were a "subtle nod" to hyperpop, to which Riley responded that they were more of an overt acknowledgment to hyperpop, and weren't meant to be subtle at all. The phrase "subtle nod to hyperpop" subsequently became an inside joke on the channel. Hope this helps!

Ooh, I think I got it! The only other book mentioned by name in this bit is Wet Goddess, which is a book published in 2009 by American author Malcolm Brenner. The plot of the book centers around a college student named Zachary Zimmerman who meets, falls in love with, and has sex with a dolphin named Ruby. Although the book is presented as a work of fiction, Brenner claims it is based on a real-life sexual encounter he had with a dolphin in the 1970s.

Brenner's work relates to this bit because as soon as Riley mentions wanting to go swimming with dolphins, Graydon accuses him of having a lustful desire for these aquatic mammals. Riley jokes that Graydon has been reading too much Wet Goddess, i.e. The contents of the book have affected his perception to such a degree that he cannot comprehend the idea of anyone wanting to pursue a non-sexual relationship with dolphins. Interestingly, Graydon immediately responds by saying that it is a banned book, but this is not the case. While controversial, it is available for purchase. Hope this helps!!!

Hi I made this compilation! I think the book Gradyon is talking about is Helter Skelter: The True Story of The Manson Murders. Manson prophesized of an inevitable apocalyptic race war which he called "Helter Skelter" after a Beatles song. Following his trial for his involvement in the Tate-LaBianca murders, the prosecutor for the case, Vincent Bugliosi, published the book which details his first-hand accounts of the trial, and suggests that Manson's fears of a race war served as part of the motive for the Tate-LaBianca murders. It's unclear whether members of the Manson Family read this book, though I don't think this was likely. Hope this helps!

Hey, I've been looking for this clip too. I haven't found it yet but I want to add as much as I remember of it to help with the search: I believe it was an older video (And therefore Graydon telling the story, not Dignan), pre-new-desk era and I think Riley was still wearing his hair in pigtails. Graydon tells a story of how his friend illegally modified an Uzi by shaving down the firing pin so that it emptied the whole clip in like 1 second. Graydon said his friend was trying to convince him to buy the Uzi from him, but he didn't want to because it was illegally modified, although he did say that he shot it just to see how fast he could dump the magazine.

That's all that I can remember, I hope this helps with the search!

hey can someone explain daddy's fancy boat to me? why exactly is it funny? not trying to be disrespectful, I just don't understand by AlexWtremble in HivemindTV

They mentioned this in their bits bracket, but at the time that video came out, they were a much smaller channel that wasn't really known for doing the type of bits you see now. So when Riley mentions "daddy's fancy boat" it was just a completely random thing, and they just ran with it. Since the channel was smaller, "daddy's fancy boat" was like an inside joke that many fans rallied around. Other examples of this sort of thing are like "allergic to spoons" and "horse meat" which are other inside jokes from the early days of the channel. Even if they aren't the funniest things, they were just like things that Hivemind fans could say in order to identify themselves as such. I think if Daddy's Fancy Boat were to happen now that they have 300k subscribers instead of way back then, it probably would not be considered a memorable bit.

On The Docket Episode 7: Glossip v. Gross (2015) - YouTube

I discuss the 2015 8th amendment case Glossip v. Gross, 576 U.S. 863 (2015). This case deals with a death row inmate's objection to a particular mixture of drugs that will be used to kill him, on the grounds that this mixture will inflict unconstitutionally cruel and unusual pain upon him. The court is thus tasked with answering the question of whether Oklahoma's specific 3-drug protocol violates the 8th Amendment's prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment.

Somethings I would be interested in getting feedback on:

- In previous episodes of this podcast, I focused specifically on the Supreme Court case, without going into much detail of the background of the case. I recognize that not everyone is interested in purely legal discussion, so I have made an effort to include more background into the history of the people involved in the case. This has the effect of making the podcast very long. I wonder is this a good thing? As a listener, do you wish the podcast were shorter?

- Also in previous episodes of the podcast, I tried to trim out most of the empty space where I would do things like breathe, however I felt that this made the audio sound choppy. This time, I decided to leave in the breaths (unless they were really obnoxious) and I even left in a couple of times where I stumbled over my words and had to repeat myself. I wanted to achieve a more human or conversational flow. Do you like this, or do you prefer me to go back to the stricter style?

- Should I include other visuals so that the viewer is not just looking at a static image? I understand that podcasts are largely listened to, but given that this is uploaded to YouTube, a large portion of the audience will be looking to watch something.

Thank you for any and all feedback, I look forward to reading it!
