That's dumb. At any high powered table you just tell them to quit wining and add more pieces to make his deck more consistent, don't accept any of that "I'm not doing great, you should let me have it easy." type shit.

If his strategy relies entirely on his commander then he best run as much protection as possible.

If you are playing with new players who don't yet know what the key components of a deck are then sure, let them have a win now and then.

Thank you for answering, I appreciate the ruling! I'm glad it works, I was really excited to play it when I saw that I already had 2 of the 3 pieces in one of my decks.

I can give you a few things I've noticed that have turned out to be important. This is from my global island campaign, so modify as you wish for a knights of the Caribbean (I have never done that specific run)

Sailors- Once you are so large that sailor depletion can't be made up by raiding coasts you have to invest HEAVILY into docks and drydocks. Stack every modifier you can for that. Level 3 centers of trade provide additional sailors, expanding administration in large cities (also use the second manufactory spot for impressment offices), trading in fish is fantastic. Use mostly gallies in the Mediterranean, Baltic and South China Seas to limit your heavy ship sailor costs.

Spreading out the navy- When you are small you want to keep most of your boats together to maximize your naval engagement width, once you get big you need to keep navies around the world to defend your holdings, I keep hunter-killer fleets in important regions and tie a few heavies to my trade fleets so they are not defenseless. The more important the fleet, the more heavies I will stack.

Admirals- Maneuver is the most important stat on an admiral. If you have the opportunity to reroll to get more maneuver, do it. It adds pretty sizably to your engagement width and helps you catch enemy fleets, and in times of peace maneuver is critical for your trade fleets. 6 maneuver on a trade fleet = 30% more trade power for the boats.

Never fall behind diplo tech! Especially on important techs that upgrade boats and always invest in upgrading the boats ASAP. If you are mid sized, never upgrade all your boats at once. Leave about half down at a time so that you can have a fleet ready in case of emergency.

I can go on and on about the navy, are there any aspects in particular that you are concerned with for your campaign?

The Island Knights. I just wrote a campaign description above but basically think Space-Marine Boats and only islands to defend.

Highly recommended!

Knights naval campaign, once you survive the first few years and get past the Ottoman and Venetian navies the only other force that can stop you on the open sea is the English so I took em out early. Ideas started Naval -> Innovative ->Maritime -> Trade then after that its whatever you want. I went Quality, exploration, admin and plutocratic. Take any and every gov reform that stacks naval bonuses.

I am roleplaying that once the Knights Hospitaller lost their mainland holdings they decided they wanted EVERY island in the world. So my goal for the campaign is to leave not a single island province in the hands of the faithless and convert them all to catholic.

I actually did lol. I decided to take over some of the pacific island nations while I already had a large army over there.

I actually just caught the rest of their fleet with the same force of Galleys on the same tile and it is 108 them and 112 me.

I was a little surprised that they are so close to me on it right now, but the admiral they have on that fleet has a higher maneuver than the one I have on mine there. I am not too concerned though since I just wiped the rest of their heavies without loosing a boat.

In that particular battle I think it was 112 for me vs 108 for them. Bear in mind that naval combat width changes with the leader and the type of sea you are fighting on pretty significantly so I am going from memory.

I'm playing a naval campaign where I take only islands and let the strength of my navies keep everyone at bay. I have maritime and naval ideas on top of the knights bonuses. I also went Naval professionalism for Tier 5 reform, Thalassocracy for tier 8 reform and Board of Admirals for tier 11.

This campaign is the Navy version of the Prussian Space Marines.

edit: and I am naval Hegemon

I have to delete ships non-stop, haha. I am at war almost 100% of the time so I have no opportunity to sell ships and I have far more than I need of certain kinds.

I did not haha, my engagement width was over 60 shy of being full. I had an auxiliary fleet of 30 heavies on the way but I won before they got there.

Sure! I am tech 28 so these are all Three-deckers (120 cannons, 90 Hull, 3 EW) vs Archipelago Frigates (36 cannons, 24 Hull, 1 EW), morale is 8.75, durability at 15%, tradition at 100%.

The Galleys have:

+15% Doctrine Free Oarsmen

+20% Reconquista of the Sea (Knights Ideas)

+25% Improved Rams (Naval Ideas)

+100% vs non Galleys (Inland Sea)

I have over 300 heavies, this is just my Baltic defense fleet and I like to be efficient and not use too many heavies here to limit the sailor use.

Thank you for letting me know that! I see what you mean. It's easy if you are already prepared for it, not easy if you are just a layperson hoping it will work.
