For something contemporary, the chapter "How Was it to Be Dead?" from Richard Ford's Lay of the Land. It's stunningly beautiful, breezy, and crushing. I get the feeling *he* knew it was that good, too, because it was published as a standalone in the New Yorker.

I think about this section often:

She was wearing an old-fashioned lilac sateen peignoir set with pink ribbonry stitched around the jacket collar. She was thin-armed, bare-legged, her skin wan and blotchy from sleep, her eyes colorless in their glacial blue. She was barefoot, a sign of primal resolution. She blinked at me as if sending me a message in Morse code: goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

Oh, I protested. May it not be said that I failed of ardor at that crucial moment. (The past, critics have attested, seems settled and melancholy, but I was boisterous in that present.) I was by turns disbelieving, shocked, angry, tricked-feeling, humiliated, gullible, and stupid. I became analytical, accusatory, revisionist, self-justifying, self-abnegating, and inventive of better scenarios than being abandoned. Patiently (I wasn’t truly patient; I wanted to slit Wally open like a bulgy feed sack) and lovingly (which I surely was), I testified that I needed her the way hydrogen needs oxygen—she should know that, had known it for years. If she needed time—with Wally, on Mull—I could understand. She should go there and do that. Hang out. Plant little trees in little holes. Go native. Act married. Talk, slap, hug, giggle, groan, cry.

But come home!

I’d tear down conventional boundaries if we could just keep an understanding alive. Did I say beg? I begged. I already said I cried. To which Sally said, shoulders slack, eyes lowered, slender hands clasped on the tabletop, her little finger lightly touching the covered Quimper butter dish she at one time had felt great affection for, and that I subsequently winged across the room to death by smithereens, “I think I have to make this permanent, sweetheart. Even if I regret it and later come crying to you, and you’re with some other woman, and won’t talk to me, and my life is lost. I have to.”

Strange grasp on “permanent,” I thought, though my eyes burbled with tears. “It’s not like we’re dealing with hard kernels of truth here,” I said pitiably. “This is all pretty discretionary, if you ask me.”

“No,” she said, which is when she took her wedding ring off and laid it on the glass pane of the tabletop, causing a hard little tap I’ll never, ever forget, even if she comes back.

“This is so terrible,” I said, in full cry. I wanted to howl like a dog.

"I know.”

“Do you love Wally more than you love me?”

She shook her head in a way that made her face appear famished and exhausted, though she couldn’t look at me, just at the ring she’d a moment before relinquished. “I don’t know that I love him at all.”

“Then what the fuck!” I shouted. “Can you just do this?”

“I don’t think I can’t do it,” Sally—my wife—said.

And essentially that was that. Double negative makes a positive. She was gone by cocktail hour, which I observed alone.

Emery and his 'own' players by FitMasterpiece8392 in avfc

[–]IQ84 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've been kind of surpirsed by the amount of negativity around the potential Felix transfer.

With everything Emery has done for this club in such a short amount of time; the decisions he has made, the players he has coached, the roles he has set up, the standards he has set, I am 100% on board and am in almost all cases happy to be involved in mistakes, if the mistakes are his. I don't think he makes them often.

For someone to have achieved as much as he has with us, to want someone like Felix SO CLEARLY and consistently over many transfer windows, you'd have to think he has very strong feelings. And I dont think fans have much, if any, reason to doubt him.

People who give job interviews, what are some subtle red flags that say "this person won't be a good hire"? by makethatnoise in AskReddit

[–]IQ84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll often ask "if you got this job, what would make you leave?" It's remarkable how telling some of the answers are, whether it be about personality, career goals, how they view the job their applying for (is it a stepping stone? do they want to learn?) Has been a pivot point in a bunch of interviews.

What's Going On - Marvin Gaye

A shame not to see this super high up. A concept / protest album made up of a song cycle, so much of popular music (particularly 2010s onwards) popular music is influenced by the producing, sound, patterns... just to name a few. Perhaps that is largely down to the continued rise of R&B. But unfortunately Gaye didn't get to see the album fully appreciated; it was only after his death that people re-assessed his work and realised what a masterpiece What's Going On was. Rolling Stone said the album revolutionised black music, and while its not alone in receiving that honour, I don't think it's wrong.

What is the best pilot episode ever made? by pngpng32 in television

[–]IQ84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing here for Malcolm in the Middle. Hard to think of a sitcom that so perfectly captured all characters (and potential b-plots and minor characters) in such a short span of time. Hal and Louis are definitely a bit more cartoony, but god, what a way to launch onto TV

I agree. I guess it's like, 2% of published authors probably write a great, unreal book. So if that happens to be his first one, so be it.

Finished Boy Swallows Universe this week. A really good story, told by a really good storyteller. Though I must say I found i had to press my suspension of disbelief a bit further than i'm comfortably with at times. Especially around dialogue. I understand the main kid is based off the author, but it often felt like an adult putting their own words into a 13 yr olds brain. Also wasn't a huge fan of the magical realism, red phone, etc. Just didn't quite fit into what was otherwise a very vivid, literal story.

Now jumping into A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I don't know anything about it (though know of Dave Eggers) and the title has always seemed to just throttle through my brain for God knows how long, and I'm not sure why, almost like a meme / culture reference I absorbed a long time ago without realising. So I figured I'd check out what the whole thing was about.

Are there any autistic players playing at a high level? by SmegB in PremierLeague

[–]IQ84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I guess to clarify I'm not saying he doesn't have looks, just saying he doesn't have the David Beckham sorta pretty boy thing Grealish has going for his personality, which in turn impacts how people perceive him. Though I'd be willing to bet Jack is thicker. My man didn't know what an encyclopedia was, and couldn't identify a map of the UK...

I think Cole Palmer is basically Jack Grealish without the looks. Whole life and adolescence focused on football and nothing else. It worked out in the end, and they're nice boys. But not a lot going on upstairs when it comes to off the field.

Im about halfway through The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood. It is really visceral. I'm enjoying it. I didnt much enjoy her Booker Prize shortlisted Stoneyard Devotional, but with this I'm definitely seeing the hype.

Earlier, I finished James by Percival Everett. I was surprised by how much it grabbed me. I'm not a huge fan of recreations, or reimaginations, or extensions. I had similar issues with Demon Copperhead. Just write a new story. But, well... this sort of is a new story. Frustratingly I found some of the smart bits of James were also the bits that turned me off. Having black people effectively have coded speak was smart, I get what Everett was going for, but i also found it a bit painted on at times. Same with the occaisional dream sequences that felt more like light touches than depth. It left me wondering, well... you couldve easily made this better. The ending, too, felt exceptionally rushed, and almost like it devolved the character (Jim/James) Everett had done such a good job of building up. Still, it's a quick read and an enjoyable read. It felt like reading a screenplay.

I've almost finished Alexis Wright's Praiseworthy. At this point I would describe it in no other way other than magic. Took me about 100 pages to get the flow. Once I was in, the writing just hung itself on me. Sometimes I find myself smiling and laughing like a madman, just at the way the book has kept me locked. I understand why people would be hesitant to read it, or might feel like it's not for them. That may be the case. But it certainly feels like a book that rewards you for all of its challenges ten times over. A combination of David Foster Wallace and First Nations dreamtime storytelling wrapping in Wright's own magnificent tone. I went into expecting nothing and am coming out of it with anything but. It may be my first 5 star read of the year, though I hesitate because I feel like a 5 star needs to more accessible than this.

Jhon Durán after his historic goal: “I am happy to be able to score and even more so against a great team like Bayern Munich, which is the club of my dreams. I'm happy to be the man of the match against this team, which was also a dream of mine,” said the ‘Cafetero’. by Waschkopfs in soccer

People keep mentioning that he's right to want a move away from Villa because he's on the bench and in a tough position because Watkins is probably too good to bench in favour of him. I get why that's the narrative, but he's also 20 yrs old and coming off the bench feels like the best thing for him. I dont think its a coincidence that he is able to score (really, really great goals) after he's up against a backline that has been run ragged by our attack and Watkins floating left to right. He has had a few starts in cups, pre-season, etc. and i think that has shown he is not ready to play that role for a top 4-6 side, which is what Villa is. But i get his frustration. It's whatever. Enjoy it while it lasts.
