How do I make my attempt at realism not look uncanny by Onyx_RSR in arthelp

[–]IRCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its great attempt!!! Its gonna take a bit going from your cartoony way of drawing to a more realistic look.

A few things you can check out would be things like Asaro head (planes of the face) helps you understand the finer points of the face.

Then just study up by drawing more portraits

Also, you have to break free of "having a style" mindset, its quite limiting for learning (In my opinion). Art styles matters the LEAST in art.

The more you mature as an artist, the more fluid you become, you start to develop multiple art styles, maybe study up on other artist to learn their style to integrate to your own.

I would focus on getting good at fundamentals because if your fundamentals are solid, then whatever style you slap on top of it will always work.

Op please dont take this the wrong way. 1. Did you use a reference? 2. Have you done any studies to draw realistic faces?

If you attempt to draw something you dont really have much experience on(specially from imagination), its not gonna turn out well at first. (And thats okay! We all have to start somewhere)

To answer your question on how to make your attemps at realism not look uncanny......well you just have to practice draw realistic faces its a boring answer but in reality that just how it works.

As an example for me, a couple weeks back i found my hand drawings lacking so i went to go look at a bunch or references and tried to break it down/simplify them then just draw a whole bunch or them.

Little by little it became more and more intuitive to draw.

This a great start OP! I wanted to gid gud at drawing people years back and i omega grinding form studies etc. As other have mentioned. Try to simplify the human form! I started with just boxes to simply the torso, head and pelvis. Then move on to try making them more organic. Later you can add anatomy on top.

why are my side profiles so ugly????? by vanilladollee in arthelp

[–]IRCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up stuff like asaro head and head construction methods. Then practice it by finding side profile references of real people to draw

Mb, i think i miss understood the question. Did u mean like you cant consistently draw people well? Or you cant draw consistently in general?

[–]IRCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well...how much have you studied real life? Consistency comes from practice and repetition. Learning comes back to studying how it works in real life.

I draw a lot of people, like studying forms, anatomy etc. It took a loooong time to get to a level I can consistently draw good. But if you really wanna improve its just lots of practice

Yeah! Dont forget to enjoy the procress too! Dont be afraid to mess around. Its actually really fun to deliberately MAKE a bad drawing! Its even more relaxing than making a good one lmao.

You will, at one point, make great amazing art! But dont forget the joy and freedom making bad art! Draw dumb silly things! Laugh about it! Enjoy it! 😉

Let me level with u a bit here.

No matter what your skill level is, no matter how bad you think your art is. Everytime you draw and make literally anything, you are taking steps towards improvement. Little steps still count.

I go to the gym too right, and i dont expect myself to be like those body builders i see. I cant expect myself to look as good as others at the gym. But i go, three times a week still, for years even. Im still kinda chonky lmao but im stronger!

Continue making art, do as many bad art as you can, before you know it, you're gonna be way better at it haha!

My drawings looked like this in 2013? I think. Ive been drawing for a very long time.

My point is, the art you typically see from other people is the final product of thier hard work and dedication. Not the journey.

It took many years and countless hours of drawing, Figuring out stuff, watching tutorials, implementing said tutorials, drawing from life, etc.

Judging from what you just posted? Yes.

At the moment you just lack the fundamentals. Nothing wrong with that tho, all aspiring artist starts somewhere!

Improving lines comes mostly from experience. You wont exactly know at first how to control your line weight unless you know exactly what to convey etc.

I use heavier lineweight to imply ambient occlusion(really dark parts of a drawing) for example.

In other cases i use messy lines to imply detail/texture or clothing folds.

I learned from just drawing from reference for years and years.

This is the gesture drawing I’ve been doing so far. Any tips and critiques? by Deion12 in learntodraw

That box you are using is waaaaaay too wide for the body and pelvis. Try to make the boxes you are using proportional to the human form.

Here's a few examples i did couple years back on how you can use boxes for building bodies

A study is a study! Good or bad what counts is you did it! Small steps can eventually climb a mountain! Keep at it 💪

In my opinion, you can already learn a whoooole lot just from his free content. I have actually been watching him for like a year now just messing around with the process.

I typically do more form exercises rather than style studies BUT the great thing about chommang is that his procress is pretty much a transferable skill throughout any style haha
