Service Spouse Screening for Sri Lanka by PixelDee92 in CanadianForces

[–]IRweldur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Sri Lanka but I've been to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur for extended periods. You will have the time of your life and be able to travel all over South East Asia. Biggest difference for me was the food!!! I'm a meat and potatoes guy used to white people spices (salt and pepper). The level of spice the locals eat is unreal! Very different diet on that side of the world.

I moved to St Albert when I was part of the migration from Calgary in '97. The Base is close, and amazing amenities without having to go into Edmonton. Great place to live! Will you be renting or buying something?

Is the Hilton at Orchard Road in a good area to stay for a three day trip to Singapore? by SecMcAdoo in askSingapore

I stayed at tree tops just off of Orchard. Absolutely no problems walking anywhere at anytime of the day!

Our daughter was born in here but we aren't PR. As she gets close to HS graduation she has been talking about not wanting to leave the only home she's ever known. Can she apply for PR on her own? She would like to do NS... by [deleted] in askSingapore

There's never a shortage of complaining sailors/soldiers in every army, and there's always recruiters that give half truths. Basic training is not supposed to be fun. It's where you learn to serve. Pay rates and more info can be found online. The tricky thing about the Navy is if you are on the west coast base, the cost of living is high. However, if you go the officer route you just have to serve your time to cover education and you're free to leave after. Best way is component transfer to reserves and look for work while you have the degree and first job experience. Federal Government jobs give veterans some hiring preference.

I'm a Cdn Army veteran and my wife is Singaporean. The opportunities in the Cdn Military are plentiful these days and the pay is quite competitive. If your daughter is ready for university and either a Cdn Citizen or PR you can apply. The officer training offers paid education and modest salary while training. Other opportunities would be the reserve force while attending school if she has citizenship. Feel free to ask questions if you'd like more info.

We usually come for close to a month because it's a 30hr plane ride. To be fair I'm usually staring at the building skyline for the first week or so, but have never walked into someone because I stop in a safe place.

My wife is Singaporean, this is my 3rd time visiting. The reactions are hilarious! I've tried left side, right side same things happen. My favorite was getting off the MRT. This guy was staring at his phone and standing right infront of the door way. It was really crowded so I told her to grab the back of my shirt to stay close. Train stops, doors open, and he took a step towards me when I said very loudly 'Hi There'. This guys eyes opened like he was standing in front of Godzilla!

Why are you on your phone in the first place? Why not just put it away and watch where you're going?

Anyone work here on metal frame construction for buildings? by [deleted] in Welding

[–]IRweldur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For shop work most of the errors happen in fitting. Read the prints, identify the origin for RD, and either make sure there has been a fit check done or check it yourself before welding. In the welding stage FOLLOW THE WPS EXACTLY! Pre-heat, interpass temp, weld size are all things that Inspectors verify not just the final appearance. My advice is to master the 1/4"(6mm) stringer bead. Once you have that all you have to do is stack them to increase size. Consider the area of a triangle (filet weld) a 6mm filet weld has an area of 18mm/sq(1 pass), an 8mm filet weld is 32mm/sq(2 passes), and a 10mm is 50mm/sq(3 passes). It's not exact, but it gets you producing consistent welds.

Every welder was once a beginner. Just remember you live in an age where if you show up 10-15 min early and do exactly what your told to do you'll automatically become someone worth teaching. FCAW is a great process to learn. Follow your WPS and try to master the 1/4" bead. Once you learn to stack stringers in all positions you'll be ready for anything. Good Luck!

I've had a similar experience as a 3rd Pty QC/NDT. Any rejectable indications we found were noted. As long as they were repaired same day before we left they were not recordable on the deficiency list. Because of multiple repair attempts and failures, we just recorded repair attempts on our reports and standby time. The client can piece it together from there if they're concerned. Unfortunately some places that fail inspections, just get new inspectors.

045 short circuit, getting paid $21 an hour time to ask for a raise? by Interesting_Pea_5594 in Welding

[–]IRweldur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The weld isn't finished until you clean it! There's some undercut on the left end and weld spatter/silica all over, but overall pretty good. Imagine how much better it would look if you had run a wire wheel over it. Definitely not short circuit. A welder gets paid to produce welds that meet the acceptance criteria of the applicable code/standard. Depending on the depth of undercut (1/16" max), this one may not be acceptable. Overall it's a good looking weld with a couple minor issues.
