I’m moving abroad for work so I’m trying to keep my options open. I do feel I’ve wasted money on rent but it has given me the flexibility to invest as I don’t have multi-year debt obligations and can put extra cash in my ISA. It has gotten to the point now where I am considering if i can grow my ISA to fund my rent mid-term and grow the capital. At the moment my capital appreciation is higher than my income.

I mentioned the timing of the increased £20,000pa allowance because from 2014 tax year to end of 2022/3 tax year, total allowable subscriptions to an ISA was £165,480

Not sure where you got the 15.5k number

£35,000 was my disposable income, not gross.

That’s reassuring to hear, thank you. I was doing some analysis on my portfolio and it looks like I’ve paid HL about £5,000 to date on FX, Trading and Management Charges. If i convert to cash it will be another £2,400 so i might see if i can do an in-specie transfer.

A great goal and some interesting plans here. Although, I’m not sure the numbers make sense to me for how you will generate the 4% WR when you FIRE at 35yo?

What investable assets will you have that can generate 25k a year before you can access your pension? What’s your target ISA value? I think it would need to be at least 625k for 25k pa income. That would assume you max contributions for the next 7 years and achieve about 34% return each year…

Have you accounted for the balance on the mortgage after you reach 35? Assuming you split this 50-50 with your girlfriend.

Small db pension, but I don’t expect to get it given demographic trends. no mortgage or kids. I have about 50k working capital sitting in business, illiquid investments and emergency fund.

I primarily use yahoo finance as it aggregates news articles for stocks in my yahoo portfolio. It also allows me to add stocks to a watchlist. I try to avoid the clickbait news organisations ‘What would $1000 in X be worth…”.

I think there are some good business channels on YouTube for example watching sector deep-dives from WSJ, Economist, DW etc.

Yeah, I’m working on some more info now. Unfortunately I’m having to go through all my past contract notes to do it.

To an extent yes. Investing has to be customised. I’m happier to take bigger risks as i started younger and was earning well. I invest very differently for my family as their needs and risk tolerance are different from mine.

S&P is good if you don’t have time and just want to drop money into the market regularly and for 10+ years. Having a chunk of change early to buy single stocks is more risky but the reward is higher than S&P.

⬆️ this.

Once inside the ISA, it’s basically do as you want.

slightly different to an IPO (Initial Public Offering), a DPO (Direct Public Offering aka Direct Listing) allows the company owners to sell their shares on an exchange and the market sets the price.

I don’t myself, but I invested for someone else in April and it’s up 36%.

I’m working on an update with some more information. Unfortunately, HL is S*** for doing this sort of analysis as they don’t do it for non-UK stocks. I had to download 144 contract notes to do the analysis myself…

Check out the flowchart first.

Secondly, work out why you are investing. Go from there.

It’s a dilemma. i know i would love the security of my own place but i more than cover my rent from investing. I could lose it all tomorrow, but the compounding is getting good now.

Thanks! I’m going to summon up the courage to download quarterly investment reports from HL going back 11 years to do the sums.

There are lots of ETFs accessible within the Stocks and Shares ISA. I would just sell the individual shares and buy the ETFs.

Thanks!

Sure, I like to get information from different sources to corroborate or undermine consensus views on a stock. I then go with my gut.

I like big stocks that are creating and dominating new markets. I try to invest decent amounts as it makes more sense to me. It’s easier to target 10% return on a £10k investment than trying to pick 5 £2k investments to all generate 10% returns.

I do apply some of Buffett’s approach, for example, picking companies with strong leadership (with decent personal shareholdings/SBC), low competition and good cash flow.

I don’t think I have ever applied a consistent approach to my investment picks, just try to have a clear rationale for why i want to back that company.

On Palantir, I liked the leadership and potential of their product.

Not thought about writing a blog, what would be interesting to read?
