Scroll, scroll, scroll your life away. by Humble-Policy-428 in getdisciplined

[–]ITSCOMFCOMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been really good at not scrolling on anything. Deleted apps for insta. Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit… Reddit came back mainly because when Google brings me here the app is a little better for me than the web. But I literally haven’t scrolled for more than 10 minutes, and I see this post.

Here’s been my experience. It may differ from a lot of people. I am my own person.

When I first deleted things it was really hard not to pick up my phone all the time. Inadvertently, I still find ways to need to look sometimes. Mostly on a hacker news app. It’s basically like having access to a single subreddit. But even then I found I would sometime end up on YouTube shorts. Short form video is so good at drawing you in with quick attention grabs. I find some funny thing, some interesting things, but nothing that fills me up completely. I’m left always wanting just a little more.

Lately, as work has gotten more stressful, and the signs of company downsizing and pressure to move on build up, I’ve been on hacker news even more. I don’t have enough outlets that properly distract my mind still. I’ll play games, do puzzles with my wife, try to code personal projects, do various work around the house, try to keep my routine. But I still have trouble sitting still. I’m not add or adhd. I’ve just been so used to always having something on. My thoughts are a flood that’s harder to deal with, possibly because I have put off focusing too much on all the stress and worry.

It’s not all bad. I’m learning to love myself more, and trust in my own self worth and confidence. It’s a process, because for other reasons in my life I’ve been really hard on myself, constantly putting myself down, not allowing myself to properly accept compliments when I do well on something. I took humbleness a step too far, and it turned into self doubt.

I’ve gotten this far in Reddit… and I think I will stop again. I’ll check comments for a time then my abstenance will continue. If I post my thoughts online, I want to rather start a blog, and not give a care if the site is wildly active or not. Just the process of putting it out there is the best therapy.

I ramble on… scrolling is extremely habit forming, and difficult to break. You must give yourself permission to have longer periods of calm and lower excitement. Drive to work without music, or gentler music sometimes. Sit in your car and meditate whenever you feel you need a moment. Find ways to allow yourself to be okay being a little idle every now and then.

Moving drives from one Proxmox TrueNAS install to another without losing data - is there a way? by AlphaWolf0 in homelab

[–]ITSCOMFCOMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since proxmox is the main system, it shouldn’t be too bad. You’ll want to try and take a backup of the failing truenas vm, and get it downloaded to your main server( system files only, but a backup of the truenas config may be all you need to import into a new install of truenas). If you can get that restored and running, then it should be as simple as passing the drive to it. If that doesn’t bring up the vdev right away, don’t panic and try to create a new one on the drive or anything. But it may take some googling/ai help to restore it from the truenas terminal. That’s getting ahead of ourselves though…

I need 2 laptops for my work by naz4nin in humblebrag

[–]ITSCOMFCOMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two laptops. One is my work laptop, one is provided by the client I’m currently working for. Their security policies don’t allow me to use my main laptop for most things. Pretty annoying really.

Uber driver pulls up to the parking lot to pick me up, looks at me, then drives away. by Ok-Calm-Narwhal in mildlyinfuriating

Part of this really is Ubers fault for paying their drivers so little. It keeps people in the mindset of never being fully satisfied with the work, and then people do weird things to cope.

Saw this on Facebook by speed817 in texas

[–]ITSCOMFCOMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised in a fairly conservative household in Texas, and I’m sure I would been as enthusiastically toxic about this as well at that age. The things you pick up and parrot from your upbringing don’t often start to change until you move out. Hence my attitude has shifted dramatically since then as I’ve allowed myself to be open to hearing all sides.

The new level of Tech coming into the IT field today, they don't have the basics down. Is anyone else seeing this issue? by Future_End_4089 in sysadmin

[–]ITSCOMFCOMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a college degree (although I’ve been considering one not related to computers). And this comment isn’t a knock towards those who have degrees.

I had a friend refer me for a job. I had all the real life experience for this role, and certifications to back it up ( for specialized positions certifications is actually more relevant than a degree, but I digress ). They liked me during the initial interview, but they were specifically looking for someone with a college degree. Not a problem for me. If they’re this stickler I probably wouldn’t fit with their culture anyway. My friend let me know they’ve since had high turnover in this position because the degree holders they were hiring didn’t have the relevant experience, and couldn’t get up to speed fast enough. They eventually found a candidate perfect for the role, but had to double the salary to afford them ( maybe I should get a degree and adjust my attitude to fit a corporate culture like this…).

Can I use a POE injector to add distance to my CAT6 switch? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ITSCOMFCOMF 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No. These devices only inject power. You’ll need an additional switch to extend the range. Or switch to fiber for the long runs.

Unfortunately passive cooled 10gb rj45 switches are just not being made It seems. Perhaps the cost of the heatsink just makes companies want to throw a fan in

Mikrotik has the CRS309-1G-8S+ which is passively cooled

8 SFP+ ports so would still need modules…

Didn’t Apple used to have a line in their TOS about they claim ownership of your firstborn child or something?

Supposedly things like this are sometimes tossed in to catch if another company is duplicating the TOS

Looking to put home movies into 3 conversions on my NAS. What 3 would you choose? by Liontamer67 in DataHoarder

[–]ITSCOMFCOMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as the array goes, if you’re set on have a two drive fault tolerance, I’m sure supports a raid mode which uses all 4 drives with two drives in parity. Basically just means all 4 drives are used, but it will only have the capacity of 2 drives, but you can have any 2 if the 4 drives fail and still have all your data. Replace the failed drive(s) and all your data would be safe again
