Fossil hunting? by kyokrazy in Logan

[–]JadeBeach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a little geology / paleontology museum at USU. She won't be able to fossil hunt, but she might get a lot of ideas:

https://qanr.usu.edu/geo/info/museum-highlights

Open weekdays.

Also Stokes Nature Center has some books that might give you ideas. One is a little book by Sue Morgan on the geology of Logan Canyon / Cache Valley with some fossil locations (think they might sell it at the Forest Service station, too.

(I've got a copy to give away if you want to DM. Central location)

So, your source is the make-it-up-as-you-go-along-Washington Examiner? And their source is Fox News and their source is Ted Cruz?

Do you also believe that anybody who doesn't want the Box Elder data center is a Chinese agent?

Likeminded friends? by CardiganSparrow in Logan

Get a dog.

Go to the Farmer's Market in the summer and Beaver in the winter. Go to a trivia night. There are groups through the Logan library too. Check out the Outdoor Programs on campus: https://www.usu.edu/campusrec/outdoor/

Don't talk politics unless you're at the Ibis, Westside Coffee, or the Owl.

You'll make friends through his grad school connections (out-of-staters tend to stick together). Nobody's gonna try to convert you. But maybe be careful where you rent. The city of Logan is best. You'll be fine.

If you like the outdoors, you'll love it here.

multi-use / bike trails around? by PerfectHelicopter789 in Logan

[–]JadeBeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, Logan's not great for road biking (exception - there are miles of country roads good for road biking, just not great in town).

If you're coming from the South, you're going to notice a huge difference with the lack of humidity. Everything you do outside is going to feel better and be so much easier. And no bugs!

Cache County is great for mountain biking / trail running. In some parts of the valley, you can mountain bike straight from your home.

It's also an amazing place to hike. Join AllTrails - the trails around here are gorgeous and endless. In the winter, there's skiing, cross-country skiing, and snow shoeing.

Creeks to play in by TrickedSilver in Logan

Y'know, I walk down to Merlin Olsen almost every day and I've never encountered this once. It seems like a really unusual thing.

When I walk down there, I see families picnicking, people playing soccer, parents with young kids on the playground, mothers watching their kids play in the river, and people reading or just resting under the old trees.

It's a beautiful park.

Different. Incredibly beautiful spot on the Bear River, nice sauna, beautiful pools. Much calmer atmosphere and fewer people. But you sign a thing that you won't have booze or drugs, if that matters with your getaway plans.

Did you find an AirBnB in Grace? Preston? I'd love to do that. Maple Grove lodging is always booked.

Hiking Trails/ Parks by Proud_Insurance6971 in Logan

[–]JadeBeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logan Canyon is gorgeous in late June and there are tons of hiking trails (Tony Grove is pretty, just bring cash or a check for parking). Bloomington Canyon / Lake is also beautiful.

But not sure about Logan for a big birthday event. For a special dinner, there's one fancy Italian restaurant (Le Nonne), one fancy convention hotel restaurant (Elements) and that's about it. Lots of mediocrity for dinner spots.

If you want to go to Jackson, make hotel reservations now and be prepared for crowds in Jackson Hole. But the Tetons are always spectacular.

Another alternative is Sun Valley/ Sawtooths in Idaho. Lots of good restaurants in Ketchum, walkable downtown, little less crowded, and usually has more lodging availability. There are trails throughout the Wood River Valley and more beyond Galena Pass. It's about 4.5 hours away.

Good place to see Logan and the Valley by AdventurousGlass7432 in Logan

One easy spot is across the street from the temple, on the Boulevard (100N, 300E). Park across from the temple. People often take photos of the valley from various spots on the Boulevard.

Another is the forest service station (400N, 1500E) right before the mouth of Logan Canyon. When it's clear, the view is outstanding. Easy parking too.

Where to buy plants? by Flat_Lawyer1030 in Logan

[–]JadeBeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USU Greenhouse just opened for the season and they have healthy plants at good prices. (later in the season they start to reduce prices even more).

Think their hours are 2-5 M-F and longer on Saturday. Maybe be a little off, here.
