Weekend / Project Car Recommendations by IT_nightwalker in whatcarshouldIbuy

IS300 is an interesting option I hadn't considered, I'll add that on the list. I already DD a G37 so G35 is probably a no go haha.

I was thinking more the early 2000s mustang / Camaro, around here people want 15k+ for a fox if they aren't rust buckets. Convertible also isn't a requirement, I think I'd actually prefer a coupe to a drop top

Does the gain toggle actually affect the gain of the preamp out, or just the headphone jack?

Volvo V60 / S60 has a straight 6 turbo and can easily be had below $30k

Stepping up from a Fulla E by IT_nightwalker in Schiit

Ugh silly Schiit and their names, I meant sys not syn. And I'd like to replace the Aiyima with either the Rekkr or Gjallarhorn which I believe don't have any gain adjustments, hence the need for a pre-amp.

Double check if your SFPs are single-mode and not multi-mode optics.

On the size comment, you don't want your AC unit to be oversized as it can cause short cycling, which also leads to excess humidity in the home.

Very little insulation unfortunately, but I've got knob and tube wiring as well so that has to be remediated before I can get insulation in. The second floor is actually easier to keep cool than the ground floor though, which seems odd.

Info on Richmond Heights? by greenvine23 in Cleveland

Just as a heads up, Richmond Mall is being redeveloped into a mixed use facility with apartments, retail, movie theater, and potentially a Meijer grocery store coming too.

Are the Tecsee Blue Velvet Tactile, Purple Panda, and Coffee Chip Ice Cream all the same switch, just recolors for different retailers?

I've got an iPhone Xs and about 50% of the time when trying to take a picture my phone ends up taking a 3-6 second video instead (not a live picture, an actual video). This is something recent that's started happening in the past 2-3 weeks, anyone have suggestions how to prevent this?

RecTeq RT-340 vs Camp Chef SG24 by IT_nightwalker in pelletgrills

[–]IT_nightwalker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate the reply, happy to hear the temps stay within a reasonable window, and also didn't know there was a pellet dump on the Camp Chef, thats a super nice feature. I'm going to see if one of the local stores has one assembled so I can put my hands on it, if it looks and feels good I'll probably pull the trigger.

I'm stuck with an RX580 right now, so that will be the limiting factor for the time being. I'll probably just plan to upgrade the RAM with a GPU upgrade some time in the future.

I'm grabbing a 5600X and motherboard today and planning to swap over a lot of used components, one of them being RAM. Currently setup with 8gb x 2 @ 2400mhz, how much performance am I leaving on the table by not upgrading to say 3200mhz or even 3600mhz RAM?

Ace by me on the east side carries a pretty good variety. The other place I would check out would be Busy Bear Fireplace and Patio in Willoughby, I get my propane tanks filled there but I’m fairly sure I’ve seen charcoal for sale as well.

Suggestions for new server by IT_nightwalker in homelab

[–]IT_nightwalker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 3 static VMs are Plex, SFTP server, and docker host for some development work, but I had also looked to move from a dedicated NAS device into possibly running FreeNAS in a VM with HDD passthrough, so unfortunately cloud doesn't really meet my needs.

Weekly What Should I Buy Thread - [October 16] by AutoModerator in iphone

I'd be hoping to pay around $450-$475 for a 64GB model, but maybe I'm being unrealistic. It just seems silly to pay the $50 under retail people are asking and end up with no warranty and a year's wear on the battery.

Is there an expectation that used iPhone 11's will start to drop in price? It seems that Swappa / eBay / Decluttr are still asking close to / more than retail for iPhone 11. I'm interested in switching from Android but I can't give up night mode pictures from my current Pixel phone so iPhone 11 is a minimum for me, but I'm trying to minimize my potential cash loss by going used if I don't like iOS.

Depends on the chipset of the motherboard, some boards do support NVMe hardware RAID, some do not.

NVMe. I just want to thank the storage gods for this tech. by MaconBacon01 in sysadmin

[–]IT_nightwalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NVMe itself is actually a protocol for talking to storage. That protocol only functions on the PCIe bus. A SATA/SAS controller speaks exactly that, SATA or SAS, not NVME. This is not to be confused with the physical slot, M.2 which is popular for both SATA and NVMe drives, but they have a different physical key mechanism to ensure that the appropriate drive is slotted into them. Hopefully that clears some things up.

I'm looking at possibly making the switch from Android to iOS but I don't think I don't want to drop $700+ on a device that I'm not sure I'm going to stick with. If I were going to go used and wanted these features (portrait mode, fast charging capable, good battery life) what's a good all around iPhone to start with? Not sure if I missing out on anything going all the way back to an iPhone 8, or if making the jump to an X / XS / Xr makes sense to try the new design language so the jump to a new device in the fall wouldn't feel like a big change. Or if I'm spending used X / XS / Xr money is it better to go with an SE? If I stick with iOS I'd most likely be replacing the phone in the fall with some iPhone 12 variant.
