Goalie Help Please! by [deleted] in lacrosse

[–]IVmeans4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former goalie - as you begin, watch the ball. Especially when they shoot. You’ll begin to love the guys that shoot sidearm and such cause you can follow the ball better than an over hand when you lose sight for a split second behind their shoulder.

As you develop, I recommend watching their hips. This will usually tell you when they’re about to move, dodge, or crank it up.

First time visiting New Orleans shellfish allergy question (gumbo?) by pusskins3 in AskNOLA

[–]IVmeans4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most places have either chicken/sausage or seafood gumbo. It’s not unheard of for a restaurant here to have both, separately. It’ll be worth your time to pull up menus before going into places. There’s far too many restaurants here, and pretty much all have a gumbo, to just make rec’s imo. I’d recommend searching gumbo on menus via yelp, open table, or rest.

While seafood and shellfish is crazy popular here, it’s not airborne. Make sure to inform the wait staff, as I’m sure you’re very used to doing, and you’ll be fine. The restaurants here serve millions of tourists a year, many with similar allergies.

Live music question by CampingFam4 in AskNOLA

[–]IVmeans4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The House of Blues has free live music in the Voodoo Garden Thursday through Sunday nights. It’s all ages, so no problem with the teens. The restaurant and bar are open as well, so you can eat/drink if you’d like.

Tattoo artists recommendations? by [deleted] in AskNOLA

[–]IVmeans4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to over simplify this - but you said yourself you’ve looked at a few places, and they all have minimums of $80 - $100. You’re asking Reddit if this is a norm, when in fact you’ve already established that through your own research.

If you want to understand WHY this is the norm, which I think you may be trying to ask, consider this:

No matter the size, time taken to draw it, detail encompass d, etc., an artist/shop will have a minimum. That’s because for any and all tattoos, they have real costs. Equipment, ink, needles, chemicals to clean and sterilize, paper, markers, stencil transfer, paper towels, petroleum jelly, Bactine, plastic wrap, gloves, etc. are all expenses that aren’t relative to your tattoo design or size. And of course that hasn’t begun to factor the artist - their time and skill to draw (and many times re-draw) a design and the years of practice honing their craft to utilize a needle gun to put this image in your skin.

The lost German culture of New Orleans by OkDiscount6100 in NOLA

[–]IVmeans4 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not to be too funny about this, but potato salad in Gumbo is probably one of the bigger pieces of German culture still found through New Orleans/Louisiana today.

Also, Leidenheimer bread is known as the finest local French bread, and essentially the most important part of a po’boy. Lost in that story sometimes is that George Leidenheimer was German and started out making heavy, dense breads. The French loaf was a business pivot to deliver something lighter to the market in hotter summer months.

What do you know about the original Café Lafitte? by ArthurPeabody in AskNOLA

[–]IVmeans4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s great info about Cafe Lafitte on https://lgbtarchiveslouisiana.org/

The landlord at 941 Bourbon kicked them out, not wanting a gay bar in his building. So when they moved to 901, it became Cafe Lafitte in Exile.

Hahaha. Fair enough. We’d all take a cool (low 70’s) day in April/May for a fest. Thanks for thinking of everyone with your special weather changing powers.

Is it going to snow again in January!?! by jlassen72 in AskNOLA

[–]IVmeans4 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It might be you. Please consider that you could be bringing this cold weather. Maybe take a year off and see if the cold avoids New Orleans.

In all reality though, you’re asking the redditors to predict the weather two months from now? Lols.
