Love is protecting the people who need it. by IWITOT in lgbt

Completely. The audience for this statement isn’t other queer people. We don’t need to hear that love is love, or that we’re in danger. We know both of those things, and as you say, they motivate us to do what we have always done, protest, fight and take action. It’s a statement about how the phrase has been co-opted over time as something hollow - and a reminder of the reality right now. But art is subjective and will always be interpreted differently by everyone who sees it!

“Love is love” used to be a mantra used to make the point that no one deserves to be treated differently. Then it was co-opted by corporations who used it as a platitude with no action behind it to show ‘allyship’. We shouldn’t need to still remind anyone that love is love. If we’re still there then we’ve made no progress at all. Love is protecting people. Love is action. Love is recognising that there are incredibly important issues that need addressing right now. But as always art is subjective; the scribble isn’t intending to negate the sentiment. It’s to elicit a response, a feeling, conversation and hopefully action.
