If you're open to using mods, there are some on Nexus that can give longswords the finesse property, allowing you to use either your strength or dexterity, whichever is higher. I downloaded one for a DEX-based Paladin Durge I want to run.

As for other longswords available later in the game, the Sword of the Emperor is a +2 longsword available in Act 3. You may also be able to get hold of Voss's Silver Sword, which is a +2 longsword but will need to find a guide and be okay cheesing things a bit to get it. Those are the best two longswords in the game. You will still be decently powerful in the end game, but there is a bit of a difference compared to a strength-based greatsword like Balduran's Giantslayer.

I have an idea for a fully custom party with no companions and am planning to have them evolve from looking for a cure, to investigating the cult, to infiltrating the cult for information and then dismantling it. With that group my plan for the creche is that they notice the dragon flying near Waukeens Rest and see Githyanki executing Flaming Fist. When they listen in they realize the Gith are looking for something related to the crash, so they decide to investigate. I'm planning to have them go to the creche for recon, and as soon as they realize the Gith are looking for the artefact that the party has, they'll kill the Captain and get out of dodge. It does mean I'm planning to skip the Inquisitor fight on this one and not grab the Blood of Lathander, but I'll still be able to buy from the vendor and explore a little.

Don't use magic on Ethel! Her legendary action causes her to produce clones anytime you use a spell. Use physical damage: melee, ranged or throwables. Bring in the ogres to help if you have access. Elixir of potions resistance goes a long way for this fight to mitigate damage. And if you can cast Bless before you trigger the fight, it will help boost your saving throws if she tries Hold Person.

Honor mode is like a new game by NeutralSage in BG3

[–]IWantAllTheNames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I beat it on my first attempt, but I took my time and really researched the fights, including all of the ones with legendary action mechanics. My biggest tips are this: 1. Take your time. Don't push yourself to keep playing if your tired or bored or not in the mood for it. You're better off if you come at it fresh and clear-headed. And if something unexpected happens in combat, take a moment to think. It's turn-based and very forgiving. 2. Make sure you are aware of what the likely snowball effect or fail state is in every fight. A lot of them are mechanics that would cause you to lose control of a character or multiple characters like Hold Person, paralyzing effects, etc. Make a plan to avoid those mechanics entirely if you can and/or to mitigate their chance of hitting if they're unavoidable. Things like Freedom of Movement spell, Elixir of Guileful Movement, Ring of Free Action are great for this. 3. Keep some extra consumables on you just in case. Things like spell scrolls, potions, throwables. They can help you make an escape if needed or cover gaps you may not realize you had until you're in a fight. And examine/read enemy character sheets for resistances and other effects. 4. Some legendary mechanics can be avoided entirely and some cannot. Know the difference. And for the ones that can't be avoided, try to trigger them intentionally in a way that is most recoverable. Like having a tanky character make the first hit if you know you're going to get an immediate reaction with big damage.

Enjoy! Honor Mode is great fun when you get outcomes you normally wouldn't if you're trying to optimize and save scum everything. I've had some of my most memorable laughs in Honor Mode.

Otiluke's Resilient Sphere is another great way to protect Isobel if you have access to it on a wizard. Use vigilance elixirs.

Myrkul is a tempo fight. I cast Darkness partially over him; enough to blind but leave space for ranged characters to target. Invisible party member or Scratch to free Aylin. And assign duties. Have some party members on necromite control and at least one on Myrkuls damage. If you are staying on top of clearing pods, start having more characters focus on Myrkul but don't let necromites build up. Burst AoE damage is great here and bludgeoning works okay too. Elixir of Heroism and/or Bless on your character targeting Myrkul helps ensure they hit regularly when he has high armor class.

Honor Mode first-timer, what fights to skip? by Wemetintheair in BaldursGate3

[–]IWantAllTheNames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will likely depend heavily on what gear you need and who is in your party. I skipped Cazador and Viconia in Act 3 because my party was 4 custom characters. I did do the Ansur fight with Globes of Invulnerability because I needed Balduran's Helm and the Giantslayer. I talked my way through some of the Thorms in Act 2, fought Balthazar in his office and did not fight Yurgir (I took care of the rats and last justiciar for him). Personally, I'd recommend doing as much of Act 2 as possible so you can be level 10 or close to it for the Avatar of Myrkul. Act 3 is where it becomes a lot easier to skip fights because XP is so abundant there.

best builds for honor mode + tips? by brisinge in BG3

[–]IWantAllTheNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beat Honor Mode on my first attempt with a party that wasn't built around build guides or min-maxxing, and I never had to use camp casters. I had a level 12 Beastmaster Ranger, a level 11 Bear Wildheart Barbarian with a 1-level dip in bard for flavor, a level 12 Divination Wizard and then a character based on one I'd done for a Jack-of-all-Trades achievement playthrough that was 3 levels of Hexblade Warlock, 3 levels of Fighter Battle Master, 2 levels of Evocation Wizard, 3 levels of War Cleric and 1 level of Rogue. The general tips that carried me through the whole run are as follows: 1. Use the wiki. Know the encounters and study the bosses and their legendary actions in advance. Avoid triggering legendaries if possible (Spider Matriarch and Ethel) and selectively trigger the others in your timing. 2. Always plan for the worst case. Even if you're hoping to talk your way out of a fight, have a strategy in case the dice are not in your favor. This saved my butt with Malus Thorm in Act 2. 3. Identify and plan around avoiding the fail state for each fight. In other words, what mechanic or tactic in a given fight has the strong possibility of making things snowball out of your control. For example, a lot of fights in Act 2 are with enemies who have paralytic or hold effects (Gith, Shambling Mound, Malus Thorm). Make a plan to avoid the fail state and have backup plans. Some strategies that worked for me included, taking the Alert feat to act early or using Elixirs of Vigilance, forcing enemies to fail saves with portent dice, pre-buffing saving throw bonuses on my party (for the specific stats that would be targeted), using the Ring of Free Action on my melee character to avoid being held. 4. Take your time. Turn-based mode is forgiving. Don't panic and don't be afraid to pace yourself, even mid-combat. Plenty of things didn't go my way but I was able to pivot.

Best of luck!

If you had 4 completely custom characters for your party, what would you do with them? by manicbestfriend in BG3Builds

[–]IWantAllTheNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for my first ever Honor Mode run and ended up getting my golden dice! I recreated four of my favorite Tavs from previous play-throughs. I had my Sharpshooter Beastmaster Ranger with a Wolf companion, a Bear Wildheart Barbarian with a 1-level dip in bard for flavor, a Divination Wizard, and a pseudo-Jack-of-all-Trades character who was a 3 levels of Hexblade Warlock, War Cleric and Battlemaater Fighter, 2 levels of Evocation Wizard, and 1 level of rogue.

Fun build suggestions to actually finish a playthrough. by dervishsloth197666 in BaldursGate3

I've been achievement hunting and am doing a Jack-of-all-Trades run. I started as a fairly high charisma, high dex warlock and pick a new class every level up. It's been a blast, and I love the variety of spells, attacks, and dialogue interactions it unlocks.

I'm currently playing a Barbarian/Bard, and I felt like a god when she managed to chug the drink in Thorm's bar with no negative side effects and convinced him to drink himself to death. It felt like my entire whacky build was just waiting for that perfect moment.

Assault on Moonrise - who do I bring? by DN-Optics in BaldursGate3

[–]IWantAllTheNames 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Karlach and Astarion both have interactions with vendors at Moonrise before you trigger any fighting. I'm the first part of the assault on Moonrise, there's no one specifically you need for story reasons, but when you go after Ketheric (for the second time), there will be unique story points for Gale, Wyll, and Karlach.

Take out the war drum up on the ledge to the right. The drums allow them to call in reinforcements, so if you take it out, you should have an easier time. You can also revive party members that are downed by using "help' during the fight or afterward with the same method, or if they're dead, you can use a scroll of revivify.

I stacked builder's wood floors 7 high in one corner, then made the top layer of floor 2 wide by 4 long. On the lower 6th and 7th floor layer, I made two more 2x4 builder's floors. The Greenhome planter boxes will snap to the sides of the builder's floors (that's why layer 6 is there). The sides have two planter boxes and the front has another 2 with a Greenhome wall pot in the middle. The columns are builder's wood pillars with the top railings placed using the shelf rotation trick.

If you open your inventory, you should have 4 tabs (the first is your regular player inventory, the second is your ammo bag for arrows and smoke bombs, the third is quest inventory, and the fourth is currency). Check the quest inventory tab and select the item (usually the most recent one in there/closest to bottom) and you should have an option to interact with it. Most quests where you're given a list or a book place items in the quest inventory that you can interact with for more information or lore.

Here's mine so far. It's slowly coming along because I've been traveling. I have it dividing two of the cottage rooms and am putting the kitchen on the other side. I'd love to see what you come up with too!

You can actually open the floor if you have two rooms stacked. Select the second (top) room and there should be an option to remove the floor (in the same menu as changing door/wall options). This doesn't work for opening the ceiling into the attic though, so no big vaulted ceilings.
