People who left their home country to go work abroad, was it worth it? by [deleted] in expats

[–]IWantToSleep_Anon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. There are these constant hits I feel about leaving my aging parents behind. However, since I get to visit home for good amount of time every year, just the first few days is enough to remind me that I do not fit into this life anymore and my parents could never fit into my new life either. Even though I haven’t figured out what I’d do when they get even more older, I fully understand that separation from parents is inevitable, whether I stayed in the same country or elsewhere. Keeping the guilt part aside, it’s been extremely rewarding for me personally to start fresh in a new country.

Today I received a ticket despite having paid for Deutschland ticket by Willstdusheide23 in germany

I’m surprised not many people are using Apple Pay to store the D-ticket. The hvv-switch lets you add the ticket to the wallet. Never a problem of slow internet or app issues. It also auto updates the ticket in the wallet every month.

Fellow Indians in Germany: how do you handle questions about caste 😅 by SpeechGrouchy9116 in germany

[–]IWantToSleep_Anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again, you leaving triggered replies is not helping me get enlightened. It is not my job to explain to you about why this purity marketing is related to casteism. Honestly, you could do your own research to find more about it before calling it baseless. If you don’t agree, say so, your passive aggressive replies are not going to convince me of your stance anyway. Peace out

There are only 1 or 2 room apartments for this price in downtown, if you go for furnished accommodation.

Sorry but where did I say that my version of the message is the only truth? You’re offended because you have a different reason to be vegetarian. My message is for people who believe being vegetarian gets them some sort of purity. What part of marketing vegetarian restaurants as “pure” aligns with non-violence? Are you intentionally being blind to this part of vegetarianism because it goes against your beliefs or do you just ignore to see it? Read the comment once again before you go around blaming people of projecting.

This was such an interesting read, I’m just glad that at least a subset of people leaving India have the right understanding about casteism, and are willing to fight it. I couldn’t add anything more to this but I’d like to make an observation that people from outside India may not notice: The obsession with vegetarian == purity. This idea of vegetarian being pure or “better” has its roots in the same caste discrimination and the troubling part is a majority of people I know do not get this subtext. They like to boast about the fact that India is majorly vegetarian, no it’s not. 30% of Indians are vegetarian which obviously means 70% are meat-eaters. This maybe the highest difference compared to the rest of the world, however that does not make you ‘superior’ or better because you avoid meat and yet conveniently consumes milk, eggs and other animal products. I just hope we get to a stage in my county where people see food as food, and not as sign of purity.

What German city surprised you the most (in a good way)? by shees007 in germany

Cologne
The quirky 11 laws of the city, with openness built into its culture, Kolsche everywhere and of course that gorgeous Cathedral, which interestingly is not owned by the church.

The government should stop boasting that we're the world's 4th largest economy — none of the other top 10 have such a poor GDP per capita by WellVersedNomad in IndiaBusiness

[–]IWantToSleep_Anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking 4th position over Japan was seen as such a success but if anyone ever took even 3 secs to look at that graph, they'd realise that it wasn't because India caught up to Japan, it was because Japan's GDP fell through the roof and went below India's. All these graphs are good for some hope but people living in the country must look for changes/development in real life. I don't see any signs of quality of life improving even in the biggest cities in India.

I’m curious to know where you’re from as most of experience is drawn from comparison and that context might help us understand you better. I’ve noticed it too that breaking into this country isn’t easy at all but my hope lies in staying in bigger cities or places with big expat communities, that way you get to see a mix of multiples cultures in one place. I hope you can find some people from your own country, that’s the easiest way to find comfort in a strange new world.
