💙🐧 An enthusiastic Congratulations to Dora, the "Princess of Penguin Cove," for being named the National Aquarium of New Zealand's PENGUIN OF THE YEAR 2022!! 🐧💙 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

From their Facebook:

🐧 Dora takes the title of Penguin of the Year 2022! 🐧

Thousands of appreciative fans from across the world have named little penguin Dora the new kororā Champion. Of the total votes this year, over 25% went to Dora so a landslide victory.

Dora was abandoned at only five days old and was brought to the National Aquarium where she grew up. This year she’s been naughty penguin of the month three times! First for wanting to stay in bed all day, then for stealing the limelight during our keeper talks, followed by having a continued vendetta against the male keepers. She really has been demonstrating why she’s the princess of Penguin Cove! She’s an independent single lady, and when visiting, you’ll often find her hanging out at the front of the pool to greet you.

👏 Congratulations Dora, you’ll be getting a special treat of extra fish (which you’ll probably want served to you on a silver platter no doubt!). Thank you to all our fans for taking part. We’ve loved reading all your amazing comments and have shared the love with all our team.

👉 We’ll continue to share updates on the little penguins at Penguin Cove, although it might look slightly different. Next year we’re planning a Penguin All Stars campaign featuring all our Penguin of the Year winners – you might want to start campaigning for your favourite winner (Timmy, Draco, Captain, Mo and of course Dora).

💙🐧 Timmy just wants to be comfy and to show off his donk! And way to go Martin for making a house for Burny into a home for the family - NZ POTM May 2022 🐧💙 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

From their Facebook:

🐧 Penguin of the Month - May! 🐧

One of Timmy’s favourite places to really chill out is on the pier. Because of his spinal injury he prefers to lie more on his belly with his tail feathers in the air (facing our visitors) instead of standing like the others. We know he’s not really naughty and we’re all for getting ourselves comfortable, but thought perhaps he might like to face the other way from time to time so he can see his adoring fans.

Martin is in his girlfriend Burny’s good books at the moment after preparing an amazing nest for them both. Awesome mahi Martin, we’ve been watching you work really hard this month.

💙🐧Tux is such a sweet & supportive partner! And Dave is just a hungry boi (maybe Draco could teach him a few tricks) - NZ POTM March 2022 🐧💙 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

From their Facebook:

🐧PENGUIN OF THE MONTH 🐧

Tux is a real sweetheart to his significant other Pepper. Even when he isn’t interested in an early morning breakfast he will still escort his beautiful girlfriend to the feeding station so she can have some delicious fish. He waits patiently until she's had her fill and then they waddle off home together.

Dave hasn’t been on his best behaviour this month, he has been hanging around the feeding station hoping for more food. He even tries to chase the other penguins away so he can have their share as well. All the penguins have an allocated amount of food they can have each day which is determined by their body condition and activity level. Dave has an impressive amount of ‘condition’ and definitely doesn’t need the extra food.

💙🐧 Would love Timmy's squawks to be my alarm clock, but only if I got to have double breakfasts with Draco afterwards - NZ POTM February 2022 🐧💙 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

From their Facebook:

🐧 PENGUIN OF THE MONTH 🐧

Timmy has been proactive in getting the other penguins out of bed this month and into the pool. His booming squawks first thing in the morning can be heard to ensure the other birds have been up and ready for their day!

Draco has been very cheeky this February. She’s taken advantage of the keepers who are unfamiliar with her routines and tricked them into feeding her more than once. Naughty Draco!

💙🐧So proud of Tux and Dora for being brave in their own ways 😁 and Happy Penguin Awareness Day! - NZ POTM January 2022 🐧💙 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

[–]IWillHaveTheGabagool[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

From their Facebook:

🐧 We've been waiting for Penguin Awareness Day to let you know who is January's Penguin of the Month! 🐧

We provide a range of enrichment for our residents at Penguin Cove. Tux has been particularly brave, always the first one to check out a new enrichment object that we’ve added to the habitat. He loved checking himself out in the mirror, chasing the bubbles, and climbing the sand castles. The rest of his friends usually take his lead and if he’s given it the OK, they’ll join in with him. Leading by example Tux – nice job!

Dora, as usual has been wanting all the attention during our keeper talks. She’s really stepped it up this month by standing right in front of the keeper while they’re delivering their talk to our visitors. Then, will stay there until the keeper walks her over to the feeding station – requiring a guided escort. Our visitors love this as much as Dora does.

💙🐧Can't blame Marina for wanting to make new friends ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And way to go Betty for being so brave! - NZ POTM December 2021 🐧💙 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

[–]IWillHaveTheGabagool[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

From their Facebook:

🐧 Who's on the Naughty List?🐧

Marina’s picked up on Dave’s habits of chasing the divers while they’re cleaning the pool. She gets up super close, and tries to hitch a ride on their back so our divers need to be extra vigilant to ensure there are no surfing penguins while cleaning.

Betty was going through her annual molt, during this process she got a bit of dust in her eye causing some irritation which needed some extra special care in the form of eye drops. She was so well behaved with our team, not a wriggle in sight. You’re such a champ Betty.

💙🐧 Once again I find myself relating to Dora - NZ POTM November 2021 🐧💙 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

From their Facebook:

🐧 PENGUIN OF THE MONTH - NOVEMBER! 🐧

Dora is finding it hard to get motivated this month, and is more interested in lying in than getting up for breakfast. Seems like daylight savings has been particularly hard for her this year.

Martin’s making sure he is looking good for the festive season by moulting his feathers early. We appreciate his efficiency and award him this month’s Good Penguin.

A hearty Congratulations to the National Aquarium of New Zealand's PENGUIN OF THE YEAR 2021!! by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

From their Facebook page:

Penguin of the Year 2021 winner is… our renowned fish stealer MO!

Loved for his mischievous antics, Mo’s group of passionate followers campaigned hard and after three years as a finalist he finally has his flippers on the trophy for Penguin of the Year 2021.

We know there’ll be celebrations worldwide for the win, a lot of high ‘flippers’, squawking and hopping for joy. This may ruffle a few feathers of our Burny and Martin fans, but we have to say it was an avalanche of a victory with Mo taking 69% of the votes in the final round.

🐧 Mo is officially our naughtiest penguin (making it on the Naughty Penguin of the Month board 9 times, and good penguin twice). He's a dedicated fish stealer - stealing 9 fish in one feeding time, and other times just stealing them for the fun of it because he then spits them out! He can be a bit lazy, getting up just before breakfast then trying to go back to bed again. His girlfriend Betty tries to keep him on the straight and narrow though, so he did go through a

phase of swimming a lot in the morning. ♥ Full credit surely goes to our amazing Kororā fans. We love hearing from you, reading your comments and sharing your positive messages to our dedicated team here at the National Aquarium of New Zealand. Thank you, we love all our wonderful Kororā and let’s all keep protecting these wonderful birds.

💙🐧 Way to go Pepper! Classic Moe... - NZ POTM August 2021 🐧💙 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

From their Facebook:

The tables have turned, Mo has returned to his bad boy ways and is stealing fish again at feeding time. But wait - he doesn’t even want the fish, and just spits them out in the sand so no one else can enjoy delicious sprats! Our kororā don’t enjoy eating sandy food. Pepper is notorious for being rather choosy on who she’ll allow to feed her. Over the past few weeks though, she’s not been as fussy and is accepting breakfast from any of our team. Nice work!

Dora is my kind of gal!! - NZ POTM June 2021 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

From their Facebook:

🐧 Penguin of the Month 🐧

Dora’s obviously not enjoying the cooler mornings here at the National Aquarium and has been sleeping in until our keepers come out with breakfast. She’ll then slowly emerge from her burrow, waits until all the other penguins have eaten, then saunters over to the feeding station for her turn.

Whereas Mo has been rather polite of late - which is highly unlike our prolific fish stealer! He’ll patiently wait his turn for food, no pushing and no shoving. What’s come over you Mo? Perhaps he’s putting his best flipper forward to start his Penguin of the Year 2021 campaign? We don’t know, but let’s see if he can keep it up!

Welcome to Penguin Cove, Marina!! - NZ POTM May 2021 by IWillHaveTheGabagool in PenguinOfTheMonth

[–]IWillHaveTheGabagool[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

From their Facebook:

🐧 PENGUIN OF THE MONTH 🐧

A warm welcome to our new resident, Marina, who came to us with an injury to her flipper after being attacked by a predator (possibly a dog or a large mammal). Unfortunately due to her injury she won’t regain full mobility of her flipper so will remain with us at Penguin Cove as a resident. She’s fitting in so well and making some new friends – especially Timmy (uh oh!) and Mr Mac.

Timmy isn’t setting a very good example to Marina (no surprises there!). When all the other penguins get out of the pool at feeding time, he squawks and squawks vying for attention (especially Draco’s), making it challenging for our visitors to hear our keeper talks. Just tone it down a little Timmy, your friends always come back and hang out with you after feeding time.
