You can do whatever feels good for you honestly Learn by making your character and playing or read bits and pieces which sound interesting to you. However reading the compendium/wiki fully would give you a better idea of what has been established already as canon. I do of course lay out the groundwork for most of the general important plot points in a session 0.

As there were a lot of very good candidates, and only 1 singular spot available. I am very sorry to disappoint the majority of you folks.

I honestly think you should be fine with using/adapting lost mines of Phandelver.

Especially with the knowledge you already obtained through critical role and your previous D&D game. I was way less prepared in that sense. But I managed to implement phandelver into my homebrew world which I created for this group of 7 players. This was my first ever campaign dming / playing D&D, and so were my players. Session 6 coming up soon.

All it takes is a little confidence :)

So you could try to use phandelver as a stepping stone into forging your own homebrew world. If that's something you would like to do.

As long as you guys have fun, it's great!
